Swim
Comments: This is a really good swim for me. I'm soooooo much more confident in my wetsuit. I don't know why, but it really makes me improve. I never felt out of breath or panicked on the swim. Just took it nice and easy and stayed calm. What would you do differently?: I think I need to incorporate more sprinting in my swim training. That's the only way I'm going to get faster. Overall I'm very happy with this swim. Transition 1
Comments: Slow transition, but I knew it was going to be a long day. I decided to eat an uncrustable and take the time to try and wipe all the sand off my feet. (where the heck were the water buckets to rinse??) This is also the first time I've ever used at wetsuit stripper!! Wow was that fun and easy. What would you do differently?: HTFU. You're racing :) Bike
Comments: The bike seemed a little long to me. I believe my Garmin said it was 56.7 miles or maybe closer to 57 miles. Overall it was a great bike for me. I know for the first hour my garmin said I was averaging in the 17MPH range. Gotta love that for a long race!! I love my "black beauty" Cervelo P2. That machine is a rocket ship. Now I just need to lose some weight to make her even faster!! What would you do differently?: My plan only ever had me ride 40 miles max. I think this was a huge mistake. I should have at least ridden close to the race distance. If I lose some weight, I can be an even faster biker. It's hard to drag my fat a$$ up some of those hills!! hehehehe Transition 2
Comments: Another slow transition. At this point I was feeling a little pain in my knee. The pain started on the very last mile (maybe after the 56 mile mark). I hobbled to my transition spot to put a way my bike. The transition volunteer asked if I was alright, and if I needed anything. I was just hurting a bit, but was hoping that when I started running it would go away (wishful thinking). I also tried to eat another uncrustable, but only was able to choke down half of it. I bet the other half smelled great sitting in the sun while I did the half mary! What would you do differently?: HFTU!! Run
Comments: OUCH!!! I ran out of transition and out the chute to the causeway. That's about it. My knee was shot. I thought I would walk a few minutes and try again. NOPE. I could maybe run 10 steps and PAIN!!!! Holy cow did it hurt. It was the most I could do to walk one foot in front of the other. I knew at that point it was going to be a long long walk. I almost broke down about three times on the run/walk. Just had to choke back the tears and just keep moving forward. I knew if I kept walking that I would eventually finish. If I even stopped to rest, I would be screwed and wouldn't be able to move. To keep me from losing it even more, I just broke the run down into little pieces. I walked from aid station to aid station!! I played little games in my head to see what good stuff was at each station. The only items I ever took was water and ice (and maybe a tums that I shoved in my tri top in transition). I didn't feel like I wanted a GU or any type of food. I looked at my watch with about 2 miles to go, and noticed that I was around the 7:15:00 mark. I thought to myself that if I could run just 2 miles at a 10 min/mile pace I could have a 7:35:00 finish!! That got my spirits up so I tried to run again. NOPE, denied!! Pain shot in the knee about 10 steps in. Just kept walking. I got back into the parking lot and close to the Expo. I saw Trish standing there rooting me on. I almost lost it again. I yelled out to her that my knee was shot, but not sure she heard me. I just wanted to finish. As soon as I got into the finishing chute, I totally spaced and forgot to grab a flag (I'm really bummed about that). I started to run when I saw Jamie and I totally lost it and started balling my eyes out. I just ran across the finish line got my medal and stopped. I walked over a table and stood there for a moment. I was SPENT mentally. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure what I could do differently on a bum knee. It was all I could do to keep walking one foot in front of the other. Post race
Warm down: Stood at a table for awhile, and then decided it was time to go to the medic tent. They gave me a bag of ice and had me sit on a cot for awhile. Jamie was great and decided to go pack up transition for me while I rested. What limited your ability to perform faster: My knee really limited me. I could have pushed for a sub 7 hour HIM if it wasn't for my knee. Event comments: I loved EVERYTHING about the Rev3 CP HIM. What a class act. They made my first HIM memorable. Woke up at and drove to transition by 5am. We decided to leave the car there so we could load up the bikes after the race was over. We setup transition, and walked the beach back to the hotel. Since our waves didn't start until after 8am, we decided to just fall back asleep. After we woke up, we ate our bagel and drank a muscle milk.
While we waited for our waves to start, we went over and did a very short practice swim. Just enough to get use to the water and warm up.
