Pre-race routine:

Got up WAY too early with my mom and we drove down to the race site from our hotel. It was her first time being a supporter at one of my races and I think that it was an eye-opening experience for her. Ate a banana from the hotel about 2 hours before start of the race. Set up my transition area and started talking to this girl from South Carolina who was just getting back into tris after a few years absence and this was her first Olympic distance-ish tri. She was doing the swim without a wetsuit which I think is REALLY brave since the water was 64 degrees! Brr.

My mom and I walked down to the lake and looked around because it was really choppy the day before from the wind and also because I had been freaking out all night because the water is this dark, opaque nastiness and because of the beware of alligators signs posted around the beach. I was happy to find that at least I wouldn't have to be battling any waves during the swim today.

Put wetsuit on about 30 minutes before start of race and promptly had to pee. Is it like a joke that no matter how many times you went to the bathroom, you're always going to have to pee after you've spent 10 minutes struggling to put a tiny piece of rubber on? Ate about half of a marathon bar and drank some gatorade 15 minutes before the start of the race.
Event warmup:

I've never swum in a wetsuit before, so I thought that I should at least get in the water for a few strokes before the start of the race. So I hopped in and was pleasantly surprised to find that it kept me SO warm. Of course that was before I put my face in the water. Did a few yards and found that I could move just as easily with the wetsuit on (I had been worried that I would be cutting my stroke short with a fullsleeve suit).
Swim
  • 39m 59s
  • 2640 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the water a little longer than I was expecting/hoping - I wanted to be out in the 37 minute range, but I'm still pretty pleased with the time. I was angry with the race director during the swim because I was pretty sure I heard him announce that there were 3 red buoys, then 5 green ones and then the final red one that you turned around. Turns out that there were 6 green buoys in the middle. Yeah - I was happy about that.
What would you do differently?:

Calm down and not let the fact that I can see other people from my wave ahead of me affect how I am swimming.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

I would say that this was a terrible T1 time, but I was 3rd in my age group in this transition. Plus, the run from the lake front up to the TA was about 1/4 mile and probably took a good minute to a minute and half. Then trying to make sure that I got my suit off without yanking my ankle chip off was another ordeal.
What would you do differently?:

Work on getting out of my wetsuit a little better.
Bike
  • 52m 44s
  • 18 miles
  • 20.48 mile/hr
Comments:

I killed the bike. I've never averaged over 20 in a race before. Great course. There were some difficult turnarounds - especially when you had to finish and there were still some people starting their second loop. Also, there was bad crash on the first loop around. I don't know how he managed to do it, but it makes you feel good to see other triathletes off their bike and helping the guy before medical aide could come (he crashed awhile before I passed the scene).
What would you do differently?:

Not too much on this course. I feel like I didn't hit the gaterade soon enough -- didn't have any until around mile 13 or so. And then I tried to squeeze a lot in because I knew I had a long run coming up.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

End of race belt slipped out while I was trying to clip it on so I had to tie it on me. Not a big deal. Not too much of a loss.
What would you do differently?:

I was 2nd in Age Group with this transition. Yankz have changed my world!!!
Run
  • 57m 24s
  • 7 miles
  • 08m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Now I'll never complain about 8:12 minute/miles, but I swear some of those girls out there are crazy. The girl that came in 3rd in my AG (only 2 minutes behind me) ran like a 50 minute 7 miler. Ridiculous.

Run felt okay. First 2 miles on the road were great. There was a killer hill and I actually managed to pass 3 or 4 people in the front stretch. Then we hit the trails around another lake in the park. And these aren't like nice wooded hard trails. These trails were so sandy that it was like trying to run on the beach (which one guy even noted to me as he passed me around mile 5). Everyone was looking for higher ground on the edges.

Weird running course aside, I think that i had a pretty good run. I actually managed to force myself to keep running the entire time. I had a slight cramp in my right calf around mile 3 and I couldn't decide if that meant that I needed more water or more gaterade (see note on taking lots of gaterade at the end of bike course). Thoughts anyone?

Gelled at mile 4 water station and actually felt a pick me up about a half mile later. Nutrition (other than the cramping) was pretty much on key for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster? Also - I probably need to train on terrain other than asphalt.
Post race
Warm down:

Water and gatorade. Walked around and tried to stretch out some. Waited near postings to see if I'd managed to hit top 2 or above in age group.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First tri of the year. Need to get settled into things. Not really used to the extra mile on the run at the end of the race.

Event comments:

I managed to qualify for Alcatraz! Slots 1 and 2 in Age Group are given a spot. That was my goal going in and so I guess I can only say that I attained what I needed to do.

This race is a great way to start off your season (for anyone from around the area). The race was really organized and you got to race against some top notch athletes (this was my first being in a tri-race with an elite division). Weather was perfect this year. I would highly recommend this race to anyone next year.
