Pre-race routine:

Racer #79
Woke at 0400. Enjoyed a granola bar & coffee at home. Then proceeded to pack the bike and head to the race site.

Arrived at 0615.
Event warmup:

Setup the transition area. Took the bike out to check the gears and have it set for T1.

Went to the swim start and swam roughly 200yrd as a warmup. Felt the entrance/exit at the swim (which was TERRIBLE).
Swim

Comments:

WOW that was slow.

Took off and immediately my goggles came off again (2yrs in a row). Rolled to my back, reset them, and kept swimming. Ignored them. Swam hard and made several passes.

I was working and the HR was pegged knowing it was a short 400yrd swim. Really was shooting for 6mins (TT time submitted). I know I passed several folks and don't really remember too many overtaking me.

The careful walk out of the water to avoid slicing my feet affected the time as the timing mat was up the hill from the water.

Overall, I maintained a top 10 in the swim.
What would you do differently?:

I guess swim harder! And fix the **** goggles from coming off!
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Long T1.

Ran pretty hard to the rack, threw on the bike shoes, helmet, and sunglasses. Took off. Quick mount at the line (no flying mount) and off I went.

Got out in front of some of the traffic pretty quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to flying mount

Comments:

Slower than last year by ~.25mph. I held back slightly to make sure I had enough for the run. Last year I died on the run, this year I wanted a good full race.

I was passed quickly by a handful of much lower racers (#34 & #57 I remember). I held a good bit of the wave at bay until Mile 7. I pushed the pace in the downhills and flats but took an easy climb on the hills. Got passed on the uphills by several, but did a decent effort of closing it on the flats.

On the descent back into transition, estimated too early to dismount the shoes and bike. I dismounted too early. I was on the pedal with too much distance to go and coasted in, instead of hammering to the last minute.

Took in the 20oz aero bottle(water) and about 4oz of the backup bottle(gatorade)
What would you do differently?:

Go harder. Work more. Peg the HR more.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

Overshot my bike rack again and had to double back by 1. Not terrible, but it didn't help. Dropped helmet, put on shoes (no socks), grabbed hat and race belt and took off.

Clipped belt as I exited and reset hat afterwards.
Run
  • 26m 11s
  • 3 miles

Comments:

Took water at the halfway stop and that was it.

Tried to keep the pace pretty comfortable, but pushed. I blew up on the run last year, and didn't want to do that this year. Attempted to not give up too much space on the run, knowing it was weaker, but didn't want to hammer until the turnaround. Kept thinking I had 3.1mi for the day.

The out was a long slow uphill, the back fairly fast. On the way back, I felt a hotspot blister forming on the arch of the right foot but didn't care. Also, got stung by a yellow jacket at mile 2.

Felt strong. I could hear the tent and finish with ~0.5 to go so started picking it up and before I knew it, the finish was on top of me. I should've gone harder.

I was hoping for sub 9s and got it fairly easily. Probably could've pushed a little harder.
What would you do differently?:

Get faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Met with the family, and watched a couple friends finish. Walked through the food tent and got some grub then went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Speed.

I was comfortable in all three and felt like I pushed the swim, held back on the bike, and was at tempo pace on the run. I need to work on getting faster overall. As usual, I took the lead on the run, lost some spaces on the bike, and lost the rest on the run

Event comments:

Really great race. I really enjoyed the new venue, but I did not enjoy the swim entrance/exit. Those need to be fixed.

Everything else was very smooth!
