Swim
Comments: Started off good. After the first 75m the swimmer behind me touched my toes. I stopped at the at the wall and let him pass. He got a little ways up and then must have run out of gas. He started breast stroking. Really! He should have stayed behind me. I lost time stopping at the wall for him. Oh well, such is the crap shoot that is the pool swim. What would you do differently?: Not let the guy pass....speed up myself. Transition 1
Comments: Ran to my bike. Slipped the shoes on, helmet and glasses on, then I was off. What would you do differently?: Nothing! This is the fastest I have ever done my t1. I am very happy with it! Bike
Comments: Got to the mount line and got on the bike. It was an open course, so there were cars. Just as I was headed out for the bike a car pulled in front of me. He kept slowing way down and stopping for the bikers ahead of him. I ended up having to pass him on the left so that I could get up to speed and go. Darn vehicles. It was super windy on the bike, that made the hills a lot harder. I rode with my aero wheels, so I had to really stay out of my aero bars, the strong crosswinds kept pushing the bike to the right. Once I got to the flat part at about the half way mark, the wind was at my back. I was able to pick up my speed looked down and I was at 26. It felt so good! Settled down to about 22-23 for the rest of the ride. What would you do differently?: Train on the hills more. It is flat as pancakes where we live. I def. need to get more hill work in. Transition 2
Comments: Took my shoes off, put the running shoes on, put my visor on, and grabbed my race belt. Started running out of T2 while putting my race belt on. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Super happy with my time. Run
Comments: My first mile was at 8:01. I started dipping into the 7's which is where I needed to be, but at about 1.5 miles in, I got a horrible side pain. The same one that I got at the recent Half mary that I ran. It hurt alot. I had to slow down. I tried to squeeze it, breath deep. But nothing seemed to help. It really frustrated me. The last 1/2mile, I was able to pick up the pace again and sprint it through the finish line. What would you do differently?: Figure out why I have been getting the side pain, and make it not happen anymore. I can run much faster than I ended up running. Post race
Warm down: Stood around for a bit to see some of the group run it in. Then showered and waited around for the awards ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: Crappy side cramp!! Event comments: Had a blast. Really shocked me to get first in my age group. Also I was ranked first in all areas throughout the race, except for the run (which is usually my strongest part). Got up at 4:45 to eat breakfast. I loaded the bike and all of my things into the van and headed over to pick up my friend at 6:45. The race didn't start till 10 but we had a 45 minute drive to get to the race site. We got there a little before transition was supposed to open. We noticed there were people already going in early, so we grabbed out bikes out of the van and grabbed a prime spot on our assigned rack.
It was super windy and a little chilly. I was not supposed to get into the pool until 39 minutes after the race started, so I did not do anything to warm up.
