Run
Comments: I didn't feel that I had trained enough, so I went into the race with the mindset to just enjoy being able to run in the sun in November, especially since I was leaving on vacation to Maui in a couple of days. Since this was a smaller Half Marathon, the route was wide open and didn't waste a lot of time and energy weaving in and out. I was able to hold a steady pace, which resulted in a PR. What would you do differently?: Log more training miles. Post race
Warm down: As soon as I crossed the finish line, I got my medal and grabbed a banana and a couple of muffins and a bottle of water. As I waited for the rest of the group to finish, I went to retrieve our bag of gear (which we consolidated into one bag) and headed to our planned meeting spot. The sun was nice and warm, which helped with keeping the muscles loose. I stretched and grabeed a couple more muffins and bottles of water while I waitied. What limited your ability to perform faster: Didn't log enough training miles (isn't that always the case). Event comments: This was a nice, intimate (3500 entries) race, that was close to home. I was very familiar with the course, so there weren't any surprises. The switchback at mile 10 was a bit deceiving, made you feel like you were closer to the finish than you really were. The unfortunate part of this race was that I passed by a gentleman who had collapsed. He was probably only a minute or two in front of me, since no medical staff had arrived yet. I later found out that he had passed away :( Despite that tragedy, I would run this race again. The timing makes this the final 1/2 Mary of the year, there is no full marathon. We carpooled to the race and took 2 cars. We left one at the finish and piled into the other car and parked at the shuttle pick up spot (obviously a point-to-point course). We didn't want the hassle of trying to catch a shuttle back to the car after the race, thus the reason why parked the second car near the finish line. We arrived early with plenty of time to check in our gear, use the PP's (although the lines were kinda crazy and unorganized) and get to the start line.
Our walk from the shuttle drop off to the starting line was a good warm up. It was a pretty brisk morning, with cool ocean breezes, but once the sun came up, it warmed up pretty quick. Did some light stretching as we waited for the race to start. by mile 1, I was feeling pretty warm and loose.
