Swim
Comments: strong first 100 yards but and i got around the first bouy okay. i ended up pretty far right of the line but not too far out of the way. went too hard on first 100 and just could never catch my breath/control my breathing. had to basically stop after 125 and catch my breath. ended up doing a lot of 1 armed pulls for a good portion of the swim. What would you do differently?: do a lot more open swim practice. slow my pace down. had i hit my goal of 6:50-7 minutes i would have been 5th in my age group on the swim. Transition 1
Comments: not having tri shoes i put my shoes on in the transistion area and ran the bike to the mount line and stopped to mount it. based on this strategy things went pretty smoothly. shoes went on easily. my mount and clipping in went smoothly. What would you do differently?: a) get some tri shoes and learn the flying mount. b) run harder out of the water. Bike
Comments: pretty pleased with my bike. pace was just ahead of my goal. felt a little slow up some of the hills but felt really fast on the down hills and flat areas. taping the gel pack to my bike worked great. probably should have used it sooner. What would you do differently?: just need to get faster overall but i was pleased with this ride. maybe could have done a little more of a warm-up. it did feel like it took me a couple of miles to get my legs going. also need to be prepared for a flat. should have had a spare tube on my bike. also should have looked over last minute changes to bike course. took shoes off too soon because i did not know they had added the loop around the transition area. I nailed my goal on avg mph but i feel like the bike is a an area that i can really get faster and cut my time. if i can get to averaging 22-23 mph i can start getting in the top 5 of my age group. Transition 2
Comments: the rolling dismount went fairly smoothly. I over ran my rack because i could not see the numbers very well (need contacts) which probably cost me 10 seconds probably. also lost a little time moving other bikes on the rack. just get a little faster and there will be fewer bikes on the rack to tussle with. getting the running shoes and getting going went pretty smoothly. no complaints here. What would you do differently?: just don't overshoot the rack. continue getting more proficient througout the transition. Run
Comments: place wise this was my strongest area. my time was decent but i know i can get it down to at least the 7-flat mark if not a little faster. i paced myself and my breathing well. i ran out the last 100 yards pretty hard. i wish i had kicked it in sooner. What would you do differently?: i would just do more speed work and brick runs in preparation. pleased with my pace but i can get it down. Post race
Warm down: nothing really. took in fluids did a litle walking. no concentrated warm-down though. not much soreness. What limited your ability to perform faster: just need to get more comfortable swimming open water. Event comments: well organized on race day. last minute course change, while not a bad change, was a little annoying only because not what i had been training for . the in and out of the swim being so muddy was also a bit annoying. food: scrambled egg sandwich and a cup of coffee. also had some water and gatorade.
woke up about 4:45, ate about 5. left house and at the race 620 (needed to be there about 6).
did a quick 10 minute bike ride and then took my stuff to transition area and laid it out. after than did a quick swim warm up. swam probably 200 yards. then walked over to start area.
would have like to have some time to do a run warm up but don't really feel like i was affected by not doing that. maybe could have used a few more minutes in the lake too.
