Swim
Comments: The hardest part of the swim for me was breathing with the wetsuit pressing on my neck right where I needed clear passage. What would you do differently?: Practice more in the open water, try to get the wetsuit adjusted. Transition 1
Comments: This being my first triathlon, I did not treat it as a race. In fact, my mantra (and that of several others around me) was: this is not a race, it's a bucket list check-box. What would you do differently?: I will not chit-chat during transition next time, but for this time I didn't care about my time so I was fine with it. Bike
Comments: I am not a biker - just learned about gear-shifting a few months ago, had no clips, was seated the entire time, and was on a borrowed bike (mine is a heavy hybrid). Based on the online description of the hills, I figured it would likely take me well over an hour to finish the bike course. I was pleasantly suprised and despite my low rank was happy with the results. What would you do differently?: Consider getting toe clips, get up off the seat on hills. Transition 2
Comments: Again, I didn't really hurry but at least didn't chat this time, as my transition area buddies were not around. What would you do differently?: Maybe ride with feet on top of shoes if I have bike shoes by then. Run
Comments: This was the hardest part of the tri for me, because I didn't have much left by the end. I used on packet of Gu at the start of the bike course and one more at the start of the run. But I was just tired and Gu wasn't going to change that. I walked a fair amount of the way because I had an unfamiliar and unsettling feeling in my calves. My goal was to finish in a vertical position without injuries, and I managed that in part by being satisfied with walking part of the run. What would you do differently?: More brick workouts to build endurance so I can run the run leg. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, had some orange, banana, water. Event comments: I had a great time and thought it was very well-organized. The transition area was all marked by number, so it was easy to find your stuff. Despite posts complaining about security, I did not experience any problems and it seemed as well-run as it could be. Cohasset is not the easiest triathlon to use as a first experience because of logistics - it is a huge field (over 900 signed up) and parking is off-site so you have to bike to the transition area. Still, I am glad I did it and I think my next tri will be easier for having done this one. Last updated: 2011-02-07 12:00 AM

? I used Joe Friel's book Your First Triathlon to train.
Rode the bike from the parking lot to the transition area. Got into the water before the race - that was about it.
