Pre-race routine:

Went out for the weekend in Montauk for the race. Woke up earlier enough to get to transition. I had some gatorade and Clif Shot Blocks.
Event warmup:

I biked 5.5 miles to transition #1 and swim start. Then swam in the ocean.
Swim
  • 16m 16s
  • 879 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim is definitely my worst skill and I have been getting some improvement. I beat my swim time from last year by one minute. I was able to sight reasonably well and stayed on course. On the turn to the shore I veered off to the right a bit because I was not sighting.

Will concentrate on swim even more.
What would you do differently?:

I need to try to get in some more open water swims which is tough living in NYC.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

I was a bit winded from the swim and took my time in transition #1. In addition, my rack space was at the end and along a sand dune. I could have moved a little quicker but wanted to save energy for bike.
What would you do differently?:

Move a bit quicker.
Bike
  • 37m 47s
  • 14 miles
  • 22.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt really good on this bike and was passing people throughout the course. I was only passed by one lead person from the wave behind me. I pushed up the one hill and passed about 6 people. I knew the course from riding it the day before and once I was over the hill the downhill momentum would carry me through the rest of the hills.

There was a slow sign too far ahead of the dismount and it was at that point I got out of the bike shoes which slowed me down the last few hundred yards. This was by far my best bike ride and was over minutes better than the prior year race.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

I feel very comfortable in T2 and can't get much faster.
Run
  • 22m 18s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Within 5 steps into the run I was quickly reminded that I had a slight infection on my big left toe. Notwithstanding, I ran well and passed most of the people in front of me. However, I think I have lost some speed during the season due to less speed work.
What would you do differently?:

More running and speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Had some gatorade, bagel and other post-race goodies.

Event comments:

This is a great race which is very well organized with a classic finish. I will try to do this race every year.
