Pre-race routine:

Swim, bike, run ... swim, bike, run, swim - almost drown, bike, hobble, run ....
Event warmup:

Look at water, try to control fear/panic over swim distance, lay in fetal position .... just kidding. Just a short jog.
Swim
  • 40m 45s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Although I spend lots of time swimming in a stationary pool (with jet) this is still my weakest event. I am 225 lbs, and not to sound like a jerk, am mostly muscle (not including my head), my technique and efficiency needs much work. It's OK - it's on my list to improve. I like the in water spread out start. There were sufficient life guards to make you feel save. Except for my time, I liked this leg.
What would you do differently?:

Would like to get under 40 mintues next year. Good thing is I have plenty of room to improve.
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

I struggled alittle with one foot and had to wait for some slower foot traffic. Not to make excuses but it did cost me a few seconds, but overall happy with T1 time.
What would you do differently?:

Kick and push slow people out of the way - jsut kidding, but maybe ask them to move.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 35s
  • 23.8 miles
  • 20.52 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my first year with a decent bike (Trek 1.5). Kept a decent pace. The good thing was that I passed all the people that passed me on my swim (and then some). Again, I'm 225 so I pay a little price but the bike tends to be my strongest leg. I loved the course. Some hills, many fast parts, some nice turns. Loved every minute of it. Most bikers are very courtious, although there are always a few that think they are Lance Armstrong looking to win $1M. Sorry dude, wrong race.
What would you do differently?:

I was a little too conservative - wanted to save the legs for the run. Next year I'd like to push for a 21-22 mph pace. The course will definately allow it.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I smoked T2! I did hit a little traffic and stopped to take a drink, but forgot to take my GU packet. That cost me at least 8 seconds. Would have loved to be under 1 minute here.
What would you do differently?:

Get the drink on the run - remember the GU!!!
Run
  • 50m 55s
  • 6 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Thought I was going to DIE the first mile, but legs came around. Once more, being 225 lbs the run is a challenge for me. I hurt my big toe in the beginning of the year - which had been giving me trouble all year. Around 3 miles it started to hurt a little, but the end it was pretty significant, but not enough to slow me down. I'd like to push for 8 minute miles, but my heart/lungs don't seem to have the in them.
What would you do differently?:

Will spend alot more time doing sprints/hills, etc. to build up the cardio/lungs. We'll see what the old machine has left in it.
Post race
Warm down:

Eat/drink

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Defiantely have to work on swim, be more agressive on bike, and work on run endurance.

Event comments:

This was my first Olympic distance event. I was hoping for an under 3 hour finish, predicting between 2:40 and 2:50. So I was thrilled with the 2:45 time (not to mention finishing alive). I've done Tobay (sprint) a few times, so this was a new experience for me. I highly recommend it to anyone. Had a great time, can't wait for 2011 to hopefully get a finish in the 2:30s.
