Swim
Comments: Awesome swim! much better than I was planning. After watching earlier waves go off in a mass of flailing humanity, I decided I was going to just sprint the start and hope to get into clean water. It worked! Problem was, I ran into the back of the previous wave before I even made the first turn. Finished third in my wave (I think). What would you do differently?: Maybe a little slower to start to be able to finish stronger. Transition 1
Comments: A little pokey getting it together with putting the shoes on. Bending over was a bad idea! Overall not bad, but my heart rate was in the 180s after the run up the hill, and I decided to take my time. What would you do differently?: Not much, just try to be a little more efficient in getting things on at the bike Bike
Comments: Was averaging 20-22mph until I developed a flat 2 miles from the finish. Decided to run it in from there rather than wait for the SAG wagon. Then ended up developing massive blisters on the bottoms of my feet from the bike shoes, and then my knee pain in the left acted up from favoring my right foot. I was determined to finish, so I just kept trucking! What would you do differently?: Learn to change a flat, and bring the stuff to do it! Transition 2
Comments: Taking my time at this point, given race was shot. What would you do differently?: Don't get a flat on the bike Run
Comments: Slow start due to the left lateral knee pain. Negative split, as it actually started feeling better after the turnaround. Great finish, though probably could have started my final kick a little sooner. What would you do differently?: Don't get a flat! I'm likely never going to be a top runner, but I can probably go fast enough on the other portions to be competitive if I can improve my run over time. Post race
Warm down: Ate pulled pork and a cookie. A little bit of stretching, and then just slowly packed my gear back up What limited your ability to perform faster: The flat killed me. I would have been somewhere around 50th after the swim and bike had I not had the flat. Instead, I finished in the 500s. Event comments: Awesome race. Despite the crowds on the bike course, very well organized, lots of help from volunteers, and plenty of cheering folks for support. Would do it again if I wasn't planning on Liberty next year. Drove up after coffee, bagel with PB, banana, and small bowl of Special K. Had everything packed and ready to go
went for a light jog (about 1/2 mile down the run course and back). Milled about and ran into Me_XMan and some other friends. Found an old friend from college who ended up being in my heat (of course, as we were grouped by age). Swam out to the far swan after the pre-race warm-up.
