Total Time = 3h 08m 39s
Overall Rank = 150/240
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 19/27
Pre-race routine:

not enough sleep.
Event warmup:

.5 mile run
Swim
  • 33m 31s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

Time trial start made drafting unlikely. Concentrating on someone else's pace would have made swim more difficult, not easier.
What would you do differently?:

Anti fog goggles- navigation last 1/4 was hard from tiredness and not seeing marker buoys
Transition 1
  • 04m
Comments:

run with shoes on - my shoes do not allow easy entry while underway. struggle to put on warm t-neck shirt on wet body, but quite happy i wore it!
What would you do differently?:

sit down sooner to extract right foot from suit
Bike
  • 1h 28m 26s
  • 28 miles
  • 19.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Cool temps meant only ~24oz water needed. Hammer for first 20oz. Gu gum drops great for fuel - easy to chew while cranking, even ok in mouth during uphill exertion
What would you do differently?:

get more sleep. i could not have pushed harder AND saved anything for the run
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

only 1 shoe off in time for dismount. some racking confusion because i thought it really mattered which way my bike was facing - WRONG! it does not matter. easy/fast front first, but thought aero bottle would cause problem, so turned bike around. cost: 5-10sec. Yet, T2 time is THIRD in age group!
What would you do differently?:

rack bike front first regardless of water bottle. get out of BOTH shoes before dismount.
Run
  • 1h 00m 52s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

surprised by gluteus maximus pain/soreness, which slowed me consistently and drastically. Probably due to 1) lack of sleep 2) hilly bike route 3) pushing too hard on leg workout 3 days before race. NO GI issues, NO tight calves
What would you do differently?:

1. more sleep 2. don't feel "guilty" about workout history 3 days before race, causing me too work too hard! MAYBE another Gu gumdrop would have helped, i don't know; it did not feel like a fuel shortage problem.
Post race
Warm down:

None. Eat and drink a lot.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1) lack of sleep 2) pushing too hard on leg workout 3 days before race.

Event comments:

MUST change the bike mount/dismount area AWAY from the curb! racers coming and going were all trying to use the same 5ft(?) wide wheel chair ramp. That was bad and scary. One accident and several close calls. Need more volunteers at bike out/in to yell "SLOW DOWN" & "DISMOUNT"!
