Swim
Comments: Swimming continues to be a relative weakness, especially given lack of training recently. Other than navigation, I was reasonably happy with this effort. Had I swam straight on the buoy line like I planned to, this would likely have been 35:30 or so. I just kept drifting off the line. Iprobably need to lift my head to sight a little more frequently, but I kind of feel like it disrupts my rhythm. Effort wise I could have gone a lot harder, but set a conservative pace because I wasn't sure what I would have. Got out of the water feeling great and not even a little tired, so I'm really happy about that. What would you do differently?: Sight more frequently to avoid swimming extra distance, and set a more agressive pace. Transition 1
Comments: Made a really stupid mistake and ran down the right-most aisle when my bike was racked in the left aisle. Had to squezze under a rack and probably cost myself 15-20 sec. Other than that transition went ok, not super fast but nothing really stood out to me. What would you do differently?: Know where my bike is racked. Bike
Comments: I set a hard but sustainable (or so I thought) pace right out of transition. The goal was to keep my hearrate under 150 at all times and I pretty much did that except maybe a couple of the bigger hills. First loop went well and was reasonably uneventful, other than the dude 20 bike lengths in front of me that just sucked a competitor's wheel for about 10 miles straight, which kind of annoyed me. The good thing is the draft marshall rode up to him, paused, and looked like they reorded or made note of his number, so hopefully he got a drafting penalty. I noticed on the second loop the wind was picking up a bit, not too bad, but more noticeable. Toward the end of the second loop my legs were going away, not totally unexpected, given my recent training. I found the out and back section pretty tough and I just wanted to be off the bike at that point. Got back to the park and the downhills helped my legs recover a bit for the run ahead. What would you do differently?: Nothing, this was a status check and I learned what I needed to... Transition 2
Comments: Had a really hard time finding my rack position becasue someone threw their wetsuit on top of my stuff. Also had to squeeze in to get my bike racked where it was. Other than that this was not too bad, maybe a little slow. What would you do differently?: Not much I could do in the situation... Run
Comments: After I got to the top of the wood chip trail hill, I actually felt really good and started knocking out 7:15 miles. I was really cruising along, feeeling good, staying topped off on hydration, until about mile 9. Hamstrings and quads started getting sore at that point, and my heartrate was beginning to elevate. I had to back off the last 2 miles or so to keep the heartrate down, but this was still a great HIM run for me. Had I known I was so close to breaking 5 hrs, I probably would have pushed the last few miles a bit harder. What would you do differently?: Not much, it was a good effort and let me know my run is in pretty good shape right now. Post race
Warm down: Stretched and had a couple sliders, loaded up the car, and hit the road back to Iowa. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training and travel for work... Event comments: Pretty good race for the buck, but I have to say the post-race activities were a little weak. Last updated: 2011-04-07 12:00 AM

First HIM of the season, and I didn't really feel super prepared going into it. My swim and bike training have been a little lacking, mostly due to travel for work and cold and wet spring weather this year. So I wasn't expecting a great result going in, I was more just looking at this race as a status check, to see where I'm at and what I need to work on for IM Moo. I took a half-day off Friday and drove up with the GF, did packet pickup, got some pasta for dinner, and relaxed in the pool and hottub at the hotel for a while. We got to sleep around 9:30 and slept really well. Up at 5 AM feeling really well-rested and ready to go.
Got to the race site a little late, so it was a bit of a rush getting setup, so not much in the way of a warmup other than 100 yards or so swimming to get used to the water temp.
