Swim
Comments: A clean swim. Felt good. My strategy was to swim wide and clean so I'd be fresh for T1 and the bike. It may have been the powder blue caps, but the washing machine was very civil. It was obvious when half the wave lined up wide right that most of the guys wanted to avoid a brawl. The only problem was a few guys had sighting problems, and I had to stop in the water three times to get on the inside of people pushing me off-course. Transition 1
Comments: Horrible, or at least it felt that way. The suit wedged on my heels because I didn't pull the suit inside out all the way. Also, after I did the usual and pulled my cap and goggles into the sleeve, my goggles fell out on the run up the hill, so I ran back and grabbed them. I did what a few people did and stopped on the lawn to strip my suit, and then ran to get on the bike. It looks like I gave away 30 seconds. What would you do differently?: Not get fancy with the goggles, and pull the wetsuit legs all the way inside out. Bike
Comments: Great ride. My computer said 21 mph flat, so the course was a little longer than the official 12 miles. After La Quinta when a draft peleton slowed me down, I pushed hard and passed aggressively. I passed a whole bunch of fish and people from previous waves, and wasn't passed until just before final hill when three 20-something guys went by. I kept them in my sights up the hill and into transition. I was so focused on technical aspects of corners and hills that when I came zooming into T2 with my right leg over the left side, I forgot to unclip the shoe I was standing on. Somehow, I was able to unclip, but my bike cartwheeled bars-seat-back wheel-upright, and I kept running, barely pausing. What would you do differently?: Ummm... Transition 2
Comments: Not bad, but not speedy. Run
Comments: Is it a coincidence that my run rank is nearly identical to my ag and overall rank? ;) The run felt good. I hunted down a couple of people, and only got passed by a couple of very fast people from later wave(s). The guy who took my ag put 3:20 into me on the run, so I still have my work cut out for me. Post race
Warm down: Gatorade, hamburger, hot dog. Hung out with friends from Palm Springs. Chatted with the guy who took our AG, and his buddy who handily took 60-64. He was first out of the water, and looks 45. Awesome. His swim strategy? Race like you're doing 8 back to back 1:05 100's. Simple ;) Event comments: Love it. Well organized, very nice vibe after the race. Prompt results for the sprint. results: http://www.resultsbyprimetime.com/RESULTS%20PAGES/APRIL11/SAWSPORTS... http://www.resultsbyprimetime.com/RESULTS%20PAGES/APRIL11/SAWSPORTS... Coffee and PB & honey in Palm Springs. A quick drive to Perris. Check-in at 5:20. Set up in the dark. Hung out. Zero stress.
I jogged the loooong route from the lake to T1 and ran a mile+ on the run course.
