Swim
Comments: took the swim nice and easy, probably 1/2 IM pace. (maybe too easy, but that was my plan!) I passed 2 swimmers and no one passed me. jumped out of the pool and hit my lap watch...4:40, but here's where I screwed up my watch...I guess I hit it 2 or 3 times. the official time includes a short run out of the pool, down some steps and into the T area. Transition 1
Comments: ok. I don't know why this took so long, except I did have serious problems and lost maybe 15-20 seconds trying to clip in. my feet kept slipping off the pedals - one try resulted in the infamous "crushing of the boys" on the bike tube. What would you do differently?: gotta work on transitions. haven't done that this year yet. Bike
Comments: just an excellent bike, except for the start mentioned above. all this biking getting ready for White Lake has helped my speed so much. I smashed my time from last year by more than 8 minutes! for most of the second half of the bike, I traded places on-and-off with 2 other 40+ year old racers. that was fun! passed many racers, got passed by 2. What would you do differently?: practice clipping in. Transition 2
Comments: it just so happened the 2 guys I was racing with were in the same rack as me and I chatted too long - I was still talking when I looked up and they were gone! What would you do differently?: focus on the my race! Run
Comments: well I met my goal of shaving off time from last year - about 3.5 minutes! I felt strong throughout, even though my run training just started again last month. I think the weights and core work paid off. What would you do differently?: still need to find some run speed. 45th in the run, and 20th in the swim and bike... Post race
Warm down: grabbed some h20 and started talking to other finishers. grabbed some COOKIES and more h20. headed up to the T area, put on a different shirt and waited for my neice and sister to come through on their T2. then I headed down to the finish to cheer them on. My neice took 3rd in her AG, and my sister took 1st! Quite a family day! What limited your ability to perform faster: limited time to get the run up-to-speed. Event comments: I loved this race last year and I loved it this year! well directed, well volunteered, well run, a good start for the tri season. Last updated: 2006-04-03 12:00 AM

rode up to Lynchburg Saturday afternoon after my son's soccer game. met my sister and neice from Harrisonburg VA at the Holiday Inn. We picked-up our packets, talked some, then talked some more. It was great to see them! we wanted to go out to eat somewhere and avoid the over priced pasta dinner at the hotel, BUT we goofed off too long and ended up eating the pasta dinner. went back to my room and did the OCD thing with my gear. maybe got 3 or so hours of sleep this year - which was great compared to about 1 hour last year!
we met in the hallway at 6 and walked the 5 blocks to the event. got my chip and body markings. raced this one for my Nana! setup the T area and the 3 of us did a short jog, short bike, and then it was time for the pre race meeting. then I hit the pool for a short w/u - damn that water was warm! talked briefly to the race director (a member of my tri club) before my start. the guy that starts the swimmers is so coooool!!! he had something nice to say to all 400 swimmers...
