Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00, had my coffee and bagel with peanut butter and jelly. Woke up Debbie and Sarah... mildly surprised that they still wanted to come with me. Loaded the bike (including front tire this time!), gear and girls into the car and headed for the race site. Wanted to get there by 5:30 becuase I wan't able to pick up my race packet the day before. Just as well, because a thunder storm came through and wiped out the event site, forcing the organizers to close early.
Event warmup:

Not much. Swung my arms around a bit and watched the poor kayakers try to set the turn buoys... current was running very strong. Not surpisingly, we started 20 minutes late... again because of the storm the night before.
Swim
  • 29m 42s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the second wave and felt sorry for the poor bastards in the first wave. When the horn went off the first turn buoy was directly into the sun. As soon as the first wave started, they moved the buoy about 100 yards to the right which must have thrown them for a loop. The sighting buoys weren't moved, so there was some confusion as to which buoys we were supposed to swim toward. We decided to aim for the turn buoy and ingore the sighting buoys. When the horn went off for our wave, I decided to stay to the right because the current (probably running at 2 knots) because I was going to get set to the right. Sighting was tough because of the chop and I think I over-compensated swimming to the right... turns out the buoy I was swimming toward was the second turn buoy. A frienly kayaker came over and informed me of my error, so I looked around, saw where I was supposed to go, and resumed my swim. Once I rounded the correct buoy I felt the full force of the current head on. That 300 meters was probably the longest 300 meters of my life. Rounding the second turn buoy, it was an easy swim into the beach... the "wiggly man" was easy to spot.
What would you do differently?:

Swim toward the correct buoy. My time was only marginally better than my split for the 1.2 mile HIM!
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

No wetsuit to deal with (water was too warm), but had difficulty getting the singlet on.
Bike
  • 57m 39s
  • 21 miles
  • 21.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt pretty good on the bike... fisrt race with the new tri-bike and wanted to come in under an hour.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Average T2 for me.
Run
  • 47m 34s
  • 4.97 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't feel comfortable until mile 3 into the run, but that's ok. My focus for this race was the bike leg.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks... common theme.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a gatorade and found Debbie and Sarah. Streched and relaxed a bit, then had some pizza. No sign of the advertised beer tent...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Could have used some more brick training, but this was my first tri of the season and was a late addition to my schedule.

Event comments:

Setup events does a good job, but unfortunately Mother Nature made things tough on 'em. Thought they did a good job of pulling it all together on race morning considering they had to start from scratch...
