Swim
Comments: I didn't seem to catch a good rhythm until after the second turn and by then my goggles were fogged up and I had a hard time sighting. At the turn around I keyed on one of the bridge pylons (the wrong one) and had to reset my course. Once I made the final turn I could not see the swim exit and ended up swimming off course. I had to breast stroke to find the exit and made a bee-line for it. I am, still, having a hard time with my breathing in the races. In the pool I have no problems with bilateral breathing. Once I get in the race I can only breath to my left. What would you do differently?: I think I am going to get some goggles with a bigger field of vision and I really need to practice OWS and sighting. I only get in the open water for the races which is not a good thing. Overall, I am very happy that I got under 2 minutes per 100. Transition 1
Comments: Thank you God for the wetsuit peelers. It was a long run from the swim exit to transition. Found my bike right where I left it, through my stuff down, put my glasses and helmet in and away I went. I left my shoes clipped in and with the long run my feet were pretty dirty when I got to the bike mount. What would you do differently?: Not much. Maybe try some swim/bike bricks to get legs used to running after the swim. Bike
Comments: Holy cow! I need to work on my hills. That turn around on San Jacinto, into the wind, was brutal. I like the challenge of the course with the hills and the turns. I didn't like it with the wind. For the most part I kept a good cadence and speed. That wind slowed me down quite a bit. It did get a little crowded but, after doing the sprint last year, I was prepared for it. The worst parts were the turn arounds where it really started slowing down in the last 2 laps. It was really great being able to see my wife and daughter a couple of times on the bike route. With the late start time she move to the run route after my second lap. What would you do differently?: Find a place where I can practice on some hills. I also think I need to add some interval training on one or two of my bike rides. Transition 2
Comments: Legs where a little wobbly coming off the bike. I stopped for a few seconds to wipe the mud off my feet before I put my socks and shoes on. What would you do differently?: I'm getting better at the flying dismount. Not much I can do about the dirt and sand in transition. Run
Comments: I am, still, having a hard time on the run after the bike. I just didn't feel like I was moving fast enough. Once again, I got a side stitch in the first mile. Worked that out and kept to my plan. (5:1 run/walk) The last mile I did not need a walk break so I just ran. What would you do differently?: Change my plan. For the shorter distances, I think I am going to just run and not do the run/walk. During my training I was putting in some brick workouts, they just didn't seem to prepare me enough. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some food and recovery drinks then walked to the massage tent and waited. What limited your ability to perform faster: My skills and ability. Event comments: My biggest issue with the race this year was the timing results. I left for the hotel after 12:00 and they still had not been posted. When the results were posted they were wrong. (Off by 4 minutes on the swim) They did get them corrected, though. I do like this race and will, probably, do it again. Just not next year, IMTX. 25 out of 77 puts me at the back of the front :) moving up Last updated: 2011-04-28 12:00 AM

Picked up packet and checked in bike Sunday afternoon so I wouldn't have to worry about finding a spot in transition. Pre-race meal at Shady Grove then went to hotel to try a get some sleep. I woke up about 5 or 5:15 and took a shower, got dressed and ate my peanut butter and banana sandwich with coffee. Left for race site about 6ish. I guess I entered in the wrong area because I had to go back and find the body marking to get my age put on my calf. I really like the race number tats. They seem to last longer and didn't wash off in the swim. Finished setting up transition and walked around and waited.
Walked around and got to see the Pros finish their swim. Did some light stretching before jumping in the water. Warmed myself up a little in the water and waited for the "bang".
