Swim
Comments: Really only needed to swim about 50 yards prior and after the far buoy as the water was so shallow. Everyone was packed together so it was congested at the turn. Certainly could have pushed harder wading through the water but you have to weigh how a hard run through the water can hurt you later. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty long run from swim into transition. Had a little trouble with one shoe but everything else went fine. Bike
Comments: Course is only a couple of miles from the house so I know it well. First few miles went quickly. Only got passed by 1 guy from earlier wave and I felt like I was hitting a comfortable but hard pace. I probably could have pushed a bit harder over the last 7 miles but felt like there was a bit of a headwind so tried to keep power output in check. First time averaging 24 mph in a race. Yeah!! AP 228/NP 244 What would you do differently?: Nothing really. I knew the course and stayed on the low end of the power numbers I was shooting for. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty solid T2. I think its the first time I've been under a minute. Run
Comments: A little disappointed with my time as I had averaged 7:31/mile in an Olympic a few weeks prior. But it was much hotter in this race and the hill out of transition really takes it out of you. Had to walk through the first aid station to get my breath. Pushed the pace over the last half mile or so. Nothing left at the finish so guess I can't complain. What would you do differently?: Run training is still a work in progress as mileage is still building after quad/hamstring problems. Post race
Warm down: Water, walked for a couple of minutes then sat on a bench to recover. Great to have my family there. Visited with friends, ate some pizza, looked at results and drank a couple of beers. Home by 11:00am..nice to do a local event. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing really. My goal was sub 1:25 so I beat my goal by a good bit. There was a really strong field of racers present this year. My time would have won my AG by 3 minutes in 2010. Was hoping for a top 3 AG finish but given the quality of the field and the guys in my AG I probably did well to finish 5th. Event comments: Beautiful setting for a race. Everything well done. The usual restless sleep. Up at 4:00am. Shower then coffee, wheat bagel and ensure. A few peanut butter crackers and sipped on Accelerade while setting up transition . Left for race at 5:10am...only a couple of miles so plenty of time to set up.
Ran a couple of hundred yards. Visited with folks. Short swim.
