Swim
Comments: I really suffered for the first 100 or so yards; heartrate was sky high and could not get into a rhythm. Finally settled in and started passing people. Could not find anyone to draft off and when I did my sweet bouy roll I ended up having to come to a complete stop as one of the women from the wave i had caught swam right across me. This was a surprise as that meant she was not making the turn! She was obviously having trouble with the swim, so I did not have the heart to run her over; I stopped and then swam around her, Took valuable time. As I think of it, she may have been heading to one of the kayaks. The rest of the swim I encountered struggling swimmers and had a lot of zig-zagging to do. What would you do differently?: I need to get my self calmed down at the start so I can get into a rhythm faster and I need to learn how to swim with people cris-crossing in front of me. I was not happy with this swim; although it was about 1:25 faster than last year. Transition 1
Comments: I have no idea why this took so long! Looking at last year, I was 50 seconds slower this time around - what's up with that? What would you do differently?: Run faster from the swim, put things on faster! Bike
Comments: For some reason, the official time puts my bike pace at 16.3 which seems slow to me; I like what auto-calculate came up with better! I guess the official time also includes the long run from T1 to the course and that explains the difference. Last year we had a longer run out and in and my pace was a tad faster then (per auto calculate), so for some reason my bike was slower this year. What would you do differently?: Pedal faster. Transition 2
Comments: Not too bad! What would you do differently?: nothing really. Run
Comments: I knew my run was going to suffer b/c i've had to keep my run volume down as I try to heal my inflamed meniscus. Still, I was not prepared for how hard this would be. Last year, for every tri i was able to keep the pace right around 8 mins/mile (last year I did 8:08 in this race) and though I could not sustain anything faster, I could pick it up here and there. This year, not so much. I had nothing left. About .50 mile from the finish a woman in my age group passed me and I could not respond at all. A spectator yelled to me, "I think you can catch her!" I informed him he was wrong :( The last 10-20 feet and right after the finish I thought I might throw-up, so I know I gave it my all. Still, it's disappointing because running is my best event! What would you do differently?: Not be injured. Post race
Warm down: Drank water, skim chocolate milk and ate a banana. Then waited for Janice to finish about 25 mins later. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of natural talent and insufficient run volume! Event comments: Despite being 30 seconds slower this year from last, almost drowning at the swim start, and really suffering on the run; I had fun in a "man, you're a masochist sort of way"! Got up around 4 and walked the dog. Ate a couple of fig newtons for breakfast. Janice picked me up and we made the long drive to Disney. Set up transition, got marked, found a non-portalet bathroom and then hung around waiting for the start; which was late by about 15-20 minutes.
None. Not allowed in the water beforehand and transition closed so far ahead of my start I didn't think a run (couldn't take the bike out) would be valuable. Plus with the pain I've been having running, didn't want to run before I had to :)
