Swim
Comments: I wish they would just call this a 1,000 yard/meter, whatever, swim...it is not half a mile. Anyway, I started in the mix, as it were. I have a hard time staying there, and let the crowd push me out the back, so I had to catch up again. I did, however, keep swimming. There was a lot more contact than in the past, but nothing too bad. Almost lost the goggles; luckily they stayed on. I ended up drafting off my friend, Jackie, at the end. It was perfect. What would you do differently?: Try to stay in the mix. I might pick up some time. Transition 1
Comments: I expected a faster transition. Not sure what took so long. 3rd fastest in my AG, though. Bike
Comments: It was starting to get very hot, so I wanted to be careful and not go out too hard on the bike. I do not use the bike computer or Garmin, so have no real idea of how fast I am going except by the mile markers. I negative split the ride, though, and this was my fastest on this course. I am still pretty far down in my AG, but if you look at my run, it actually seems to pay off in the end. What would you do differently?: Possibly ride a bit harder, but I am not sure my run would have been as good if I had. Transition 2
Comments: Again, slower than I expected, but 2nd fastest in my AG. Huh. What would you do differently?: Faster, faster, faster... Run
Comments: This is where I managed to run into 3rd place. I passed 4 women in my age group. Guess what...when it's hot like this...it's not about the bike. It's about the run. And while people around me were dying, I was doing fine, and ended up with a negative split and my fastest run on this course in 5 years. I loved passing the men from the wave behind ours who blew by me on the bike, and I loved passing the young guys who started 7 and 14 minutes in front of me. It was a fun run...hot...but fun. What would you do differently?: Maybe start a little faster. I gave myself a few minutes to get my HR and breathing down at the beginning, but otherwise, I had a very good run today. Post race
Warm down: Two bottles of water, then a beer. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mostly, the heat. Event comments: City of Ridgeland puts on a great race with great food and fantastic awards. Last updated: 2011-05-12 12:00 AM

Heatwave is our hometown race, a mere 5 minutes from my house, so I spend way too much time socializing...
