Pre-race routine:

Just had some oatmeal before leaving the hotel. We left a little late so we had to rush to get our stuff in transition, of course resulting in a pretty bad spot to rack my bike.
Event warmup:

Does running around trying to get my transistion spot ready?
Swim
  • 30m 20s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was a little disappointed that the water was too warm for wetsuits, but the swim still turned out pretty well. I went out quite conservatively as to not affect my bike and run legs and didn't really know what to expect since this was my first OLY. I do think I could have pushed the pace a little, though. However, I'm still happy how it turned out.
What would you do differently?:

I think I will experiment in my next OLY and swim a little faster, maybe just fast enough to take a minute off the swim leg.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

I took my time during my transitions and I know I can go much faster. I think I have a lot time I can make up just by having a faster transition
What would you do differently?:

Just go faster, that's all. I'm sure it won't affect my race at all by doing so.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 59s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.62 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a lot of fun out on the bike course since it's not very often that I get to ride on long stretches without stopping for this long. This goes for any race I guess but I also really enjoyed the scenery, especially crossing the river twice.

Well, I'm not the best cyclist so I got passed up quite a bit so I know I have my work cut out for me on the bike this winter. With that said, I do think I could have gone a little faster (just a little) without affecting my run too much. I'm always worrying about the run and I don't really push the pace on the bike which may be losing me some time.
What would you do differently?:

I'm sure i could have saved 1-2 minutes without harming the rest of the race so I will push the pace a little next time just enough to do so.
Transition 2
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Once again I took my time here. This is actually one of the worst T2's in the field lol! I'm not sure why I do this, but I know it doesn't help any or make me any fresher. I can probably make up a whole minute, at least, in T2!
What would you do differently?:

FASTER!
Run
  • 46m 22s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Ah, this is where I surprised myself! I was hoping to run a 7:40/mi pace and I wasn't even sure if I was capable of that in an OLY.

Ok, first of all, I lost the watch strap to my Garmin so on my training runs i just hold it but in my last two races I decided not to bring it on the run. But, in this race I decided to run with it last minute as I was getting off my bike. Once I started running for a few minutes I realized I hadn't started the timer so I started it late, but that was no big deal. After about a half mile or so I looked at my Garmin and it didn't have the data fields I wanted so I changed them while I was running.

I got it to show the info I wanted and when I looked at the avg pace per mile it said 7:15 and I was like "no way!" so I decided to slow down a little and ran 7:19 for that mile. The next few miles were at about a 7:25 pace and the last was 7:45 I think. Just watching my Garmin throughout the run and feeling the way I did had me excited the whole way and I ended up with a 7:29/mi avg pace which I am super happy about.

What would you do differently?:

I don't think I can do much different, I put my all into the run. I guess I could have tried to evenly pace it or even negative split it but I really wasn't sure what to expect since, once again, this was my first OLY.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some stuff from the recovery tent and sat down for a bit to wait for my brother and friend to finish. I know I put everything into that run since I felt pretty nauseous for a while afterwards. I knew it may be a while beforr they finished so I went to change and gather all my stuff from transition. Once they came in, I waited for them to grab their bikes and gear and we headed over to grab our free beers, first time I ever did that after a race...quite refreshing!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably the fact that I didn't know what to expect from the olympic distance.

Event comments:

I've got to say this is my favorite race so far, not my biggest accomplishment, but still my favorite overall.
