Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Quazzy on Friday and got there around 3:00pm. Checked in for both races and got two sets of numbers, swim caps, timing chips, (but only 1 T-shirt). Walked around the expo and visited the All3Sports.com tent to find so wetsuit glue. Wasn't successful, so I went to the car put my stickers on my bike and dropped off my bike and then headed to the hotel in Dansbury. Walked to a Grinder place and had a Roast Beef sub. Watched some TV and set up my stuff and packed my gear bag for the race. Finally mixed my bottles of EFS and UltraGen with Prerace and went to bed. Woke up at 3:55 am for no particular reason and just laid their until my alarm went off at 5:00am. Got dressed, grabbed a towel and headed out. Grabbed a bagel at Dunkin Donuts and drank my UltraGen with Prerace on the ride. Got to the park, set up transition and then wandered around transition and talked to some of my teammates including, Chad, Jammie, Chris, and David. Tried to find Josh to give him the EFS and Prerace, but fortunately his lost bag arrived at the hotel last night with his stuff and he didn't need it. Finally I sprayed down with sunscreen and Trislide and got in my wetsuit and headed down to the water.
Event warmup:

Got to the beach with enough time to do about 10-15 minutes a light swimming. Water was warmer than the air (about 68-69 degrees). Then we got called ashore, they did the invocation and National Anthem and stage the first wave which was mine.

Comments:

Since I was doing two races I held back and to the outside at the start and tried to find some open space. The first buoy helped to break up the field and gave me some open water. Rather uneventful swim. Was dead on each bouy going out, was a bit tough on the cross leg as you were looking straight into the sun but I eventually found the buoys. Coming back I drifted to the outside toward shore a bit and had to maneauver around the diving dock but I was in the main flow of traffic. Not a great swim but under control.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have pushed it a lot more in the middle as I wasjust coasting along.
Transition 1
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

Long run up to the transition area and I foght with the arms of my suit so I took it slow. Very methodically and smooth transition and took my time.
What would you do differently?:

Guess I could have been a bit more organized and quicker and run to and from the rack as I went from 157th out of the water to 180th at bike out.

Comments:

I tried to ride hard but still save some for tomorrow and I think I met those goals. Road pretty smooth and found a nice tempo. You got into the hills pretty quickly and the frist few miles were still pretty cool especially when you are still wet. Rode a pretty consistant pace and did well on the hills except for the one right after the turn where the Olympic and Half courses split and I started out those hills at way too high gear. The two steep hills on the front half I nailed dropping to an easy gear and keeping my cadence and momentum high. The second half of the ride felt great. I got into a great tempo on the shallow hills and even the farm smells didn't bug me. The big decent at around mile 18 was awesome. I hit 50 mph at one point! That was exhilerating! The last few hills I spun through and I kept going back and forth with this one lady from about half way on. Very fun ride. Picked up about 50 positions going from 180th to 133rd among the men. Had one bottle of EFS which I drank at mile 10, and 20 and in transition.
What would you do differently?:

It was a good ride, maybe would have had some liquid shot about half way but the EFS was good enough today. Start at a easier gear on the two hills after the split.
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Trotted with the bike after getting a high five from the REV3 staff. Had issues getting my bike racked but other than that it was a smooth transition, I reapllied sunscreen and finished off my bike bottle before heading out. Lost 3 spots O/A and 1 in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

Probably was good without more sunscreen since it was SPF 100.
Run
  • 50m 9s

Comments:

Starting off I felt pretty good and got my legs under me and rolled thru the first few miles. The next mile of rolling hills and the long hill in mile 4 was a bit of a grind but I fought through it and found that at the top I had some pop in my legs and pushed mile 5 and felt smooth and actually made some good progress. The last mile is a mean hill up under the main road and around to the top but at least I was mentally ready for it this year and I pushed to the top and then tried to stride to the finish, had 3-4 people pass my as we came off the pavement into the back exit to the park and I almost ate it on the railroad track so I eased it home. Still head my overall (men) and age spots the same throughout.
What would you do differently?:

Wish I could have finished harder and beat out those sprinters at the end. But I actually felt like I was racing for once.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a iced cold towel and then met up with a bunch of my teammates. Drank some gatorade and muscle milk and then walked to the All3 sports shack and saw they had wetsuit glue so I ran back to transition packed up my bike and stuff and got my wallet and headed back to buy the glue. They headed back to the hotel

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Another race scheduled tommorrow on these same hills.

Event comments:

Very good time! Quazzy added a new wooden roller coaster, Recovery Pump had the recovery lounge and the big screen was cool. The little Rev Kids adventure race, concerts and a chance to hang with the pros. Plus a nice food spread. And this was the warm up event!
