Swim
Comments: Terrible swim! There were several times where I thought I may not make it. I had to do a lot of backstroke to catch my breath. Don't know what was going on but I never got in a good breathing rhythm and I paid for it. I know that the hot water temperature didn't help. I was so glad to be done with the swim. The swim is always my weak point but it's never been this bad. Transition 1
Comments: Slow transition time but there is a long run up to transition up a big hill. And honestly I wasn't up to running at that point. I just needed to compose myself. Stopped and talked to my wife and kids too so that slowed me down. Bike
Comments: Very hot ride on a rolling course. Overall the pavement was in good shape for the most part and there were some nice downhills. I think I hit 42 mph on one downhill. Seemed like there were more climbs than downhills though. Took in 1 ea one hour bottle of Infinit and 1 ea two hour bottle of Infinit. Also took four salt tab's and ate a clif bar. My nutrition was great. Transition 2
Comments: Another slow transition but it was hot and I wanted to get myself prepared for the run. Drank some ice cold water from my cooler and poured ice on myself. Run
Comments: This was a very hot run. The heat index was pushing 100 and there was no shade to be found anywhere. The volunteers at the tents on the run course were super though. They handed out rags that were sitting in ice water. Those felt amazing. I carried a water bottle with me as I left transition and was looking for a place to throw it away. I never found a trash can and was very fortunate in the end that I didn't. At each tent the volunteers would fill it for me with cold water. I'd wait until I got about half a mile out from the tent and dump the water on my head and shoulders to help cool myself. I think it helped me a ton. But in the end I was just ready to be done with this run. Post race
Warm down: Got my finisher t-shirt, medal, and finisher hat and found a chair. Cooled off then dipped in the lake before changing clothes for the ride home. Event comments: Good race with great volunteer's but not a race that should be taken lightly. Proper training and acclimation to the heat is key. Last updated: 2011-05-30 12:00 AM

Got into town around 5:00 and went to check my bike in and pick up my bag and numbers. Checked out the transition area and realized that it was about 95 degrees at 6:00 pm. I knew tomorrow was going to be about the same. Very high humidity. After getting my bike checked in we headed out to find dinner. My wife and I had our two daughters in tow (1 and 4 years old). Ate some pizza at Johnny's and had two beers. Then back to the hotel. Froze two bottles of Infinit and got some ice and water bottles for my cooler. Then hit the bed.
Didn't get to the site until about 6:25. With my cooler in tote I set up my transition area. The little cooler was key b/c it kept my Infinit near frozen a the start of the bike ride and I had ice cold water in my aero bottle. After setting up transition I walked down and did a brief warm up swim in the very hot lake. Right then I knew it was going to be a tough swim. The water temp was 86 degrees according to the race director!
