Swim
Comments: I felt very relaxed at the start for the first time ever. I set my self on the left, up front. All the turns would be left. The horn went off the usual kicking and punching started but I got in a rhythm very quickly. I swam next to a guy to the first buoy and as we rounded it I got this great idea to draft him since we were swimming the same speed. This worked great but I lost him in the masses at the next buoy. Got to the beach made the short run back to the water took about three steps into the water and dove back in. The run on the beach spiked my heart rate so it took a few seconds to settle back in. the second lap felt better than the first. Gina kept track of how far back time wise and how many people were in front of me so she called that out as I ran by, Thanks babe:) What would you do differently?: I lost three and a half min. to the first guy in my age group. I need to get faster in the water. Transition 1
Comments: Not one of my more graceful mounts but it worked. What would you do differently?: This was a pretty flawless transition. Bike
Comments: Started peddling with my feet on top of my shoes. Made the right turn with another guy, he says "get over this hill before you put your feet in". I say thanks but did I listen,,, no way. so I manage to unclip my left shoe without my foot being in it. Thankfully my big toe caught the strap and I managed not to drop my shoe. So I got that straightened out, got over the hill and put on my right foot in the shoe and away I went. I immediately went to work, passing people like crazy. I had mixed three gels in with my sports drink. Been working with this the last couple months, why not get your nutrition in as you drink right? I hit that every 10 min, perfect. Not much in the way of racing, no one ever passed me on the bike portion, Once I got back into the residential area I was all alone. I didn't see another racer for maybe 8-9 min. Then I turned on Almaden and caught a few more guys before getting my feet out and ready to dismount. What would you do differently?: I will heed the guys warning about the feet in shoes after the hill next time other than that, Nothing, I hammered the bike course. Transition 2
Comments: Shaved 44 seconds from last years T2 time again flawless What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: I been doing some running after my long rides so my legs felt very good right from the start. Skipped the first water station didn't feel I needed it. The first guy I passed was in my age group at mile 1. I didn't catch anyone else for another 2 miles. In the 4th mile I caught three more guys, 2 were younger 1 was older. Then in the last mile I passed one more guy. That was all the passing I would do. My mile times were very consistent and faster than I thought possible. What would you do differently?: I was 2 1/2 min faster than last year. Just keep getting faster? Post race
Warm down: After coughing up a lung, Gina and I enjoyed a chicken burrito, some fruit, bagel with peanut butter and jelly. Lots of water. Waited around for the results, I thought from last years results I might be close to a third in my age group. Chatted with a couple sitting next to us for a while. I am so fortunate to have so much support from my family and friends. It means everything to me, Thank you. Gina, thank you for who you are. How did I get so lucky??? What limited your ability to perform faster: I cut close to 12 min. from last years time. Most of that was bike and run. Need to get faster in the water. Event comments: Super fast course, The lake water was better than last year, the roads are mostly smooth as close to perfect as you will find these days, The run course was flat. Highly recommended. This was a throw in race or a C priority race that I signed up for about two weeks ago. I had no intentions of tapering for this race as My IronMan is about six weeks away. Turns out I got sick on Wednesday so I took that day off from training. I did some light training leading up to the event Thurs, Fri and Sat. I would make a game time decision as to how hard I would race this one. Woke up Saturday night soaked in sweat, got up, cooled off and went back to bed. Woke up and felt Olympic and good to go.
I always run the last half mile of the bike course to get an idea or landmark of where to start getting my feet out of my shoes and peddle with them on top. That being said did about a mile run warm up, went back to transition, did my final setup there, donned my wet suit and did about a 5 min. warm up swim.
