Swim
Comments: Not my first OWS, nor my first time in the ocean, but my first Ocean OWS. Stung by a jellyfish immediately, then once again halfway through. The second one really nailed me. I was just slow. Not panicked, not fatigued, but slow. Very very slow. OK, probably fatigued. What would you do differently?: Practice ocean wave OWS more. Transition 1
Comments: I wore my vibram fivefingers for the whole race, as it was all on the beach. This was my first time riding a bike on sand. The bike was interesting. They weren't kidding about the wind being like going uphill. What would you do differently?: Be fitter. Bike
Comments: Slower than I expected, but the swim took a lot out of me. What would you do differently?: Mountain bike more ahead of time. Transition 2
Comments: Wasn't expecting to grab my music, but then I did. Was surprised I wasn't the last to get running. Run
Comments: I must say, it's nice to make people smile. All the folks returning from the out and back could see my doughboy shirt and that's awesome. What would you do differently?: I would push the last mile so I could pass the 62 year old woman who passed me. Post race
Warm down: hug my kids, get some pictures. Skip the massage to rush my Jeep to a repair, only to find out I had to turn around and do it later. Information I would have appreciated before I turned down a massage. What limited your ability to perform faster: wind, jellyfish, weight and overall fitness. Event comments: Go Tri Sports does two of these a year, so they have their system down well. I was impressed at the support for a $40 race. I needed a bike repair at registration, and was helped in seconds. Not only did I have flat tires, I had an engaged rear brake. (I don't ride this bike often.) The people were great. I would consider the long trip again to visit with friends the same weekend as a Beach Bum Tri. It was also very nice to have a venue where family and friends could play on the beach while I took forever and a day to complete a sprint. I also thought the trophies looked very unique, not that I'd ever win one, but it wasn't the usual sports trophy. Last updated: 2011-06-02 12:00 AM

Wake up at friends' place in Port Royal SC, wake everyone up by cooking my eggs and vegetables, slam down some OJ and hit the road to Hilton Head.
Seek out help with my flat tire, which I got immediately. Wade into ocean a bit to see how the water feels.
