Swim
Comments: Set my tempo trainer for 1:14. This was a super small wave and there was enough space for most to be at the front. I started out faster than my set tempo, but then settled into the tempo after a minute. I was surprised to be swimming along side others and even drafting a little off of them. This hasn't really happened in a race before. I didn't have to do that much sighting since I usually had a pretty good sense of where I was since the river isn't that wide. Again I felt really good through most of the swim. Breathing was fine and didn't feel too tired at the end either. Hopefully this means my longer swim in 2 weeks will go better than the one in my last Oly. What would you do differently?: Set my tempo faster. Transition 1
Comments: Not my best T1. Wetsuit got stuck a bit on my left foot. And then my tempo trainer beeping was driving me crazy, so I fumbled for awhile to turn it off. What would you do differently?: Think more about what I can get done before I arrive at T1. Bike
Comments: First two loops were pretty good, and then the third loop I was loosing a little bit and slowed down. But I brought the pace back up a little bit for the last loop. I was leap frogging with someone on the last loop which was awesome. I like a little competition. It makes me work harder. And I'm getting less apprehensive about passing people who look "fast" to me. This was my first race with my aerodrink bottle and I think it was an excellent thing to add to my bike. I got through the bottle of sports drink in the third loop. And then I managed to refill it with water while still riding. This was also my first time eating something while on the bike. I stashed some Gu Chomps in my back pocket and had a few of them during the last loop. I think I did a great job at nutrition. I always get an evil headache later after a race is over, probably due to some dehydration. But no headache today! What would you do differently?: Less pushing gears, and more higher cadence in a lower gear. Transition 2
Comments: My feet were still wet so I knew I would be getting blisters today if I didn't wear socks. So I sat down (which I never do in transition) and put on some socks. I'm so glad I did too. Absolutely no issues with blisters today, and my feet were soaked due to all the water I was pouring on me during the run. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I think I made the right decisions this race. Run
Comments: I started out way too fast, at a sprint run pace. But I was able to slow it down and catch my breath before ascending the first hill. Run up the whole hill and was winded by the top. Didn't worry too much about my pace, but focused on running at a pace that felt like I was between a half marathon and 10K. I didn't want to push it too much in the first half because the sun was out and things were heating up quickly. Kind of a lonely run. One person passed me on the run, otherwise I pass someone every mile or so. My belly was feeling a little sloshy, but I still tried to take in some fluids at the stations. And what I didn't drink, I poured over my head which felt great. As I was about to turn onto the final road, Kate Queeney cheered me on telling me if I can talk, then I'm not working hard enough. I kicked in and sprinted to the finish. Good finish. What would you do differently?: Try to run up the switchback next time. Post race
Warm down: Jumped into the river which felt incredible. Drank as much as I could. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not my A race, and not having more people around me on the run to make me want to run faster. Event comments: There were some issues with traffic at the intersection before turning onto Nash's Road. And their website is not good. For example, I had no idea I could pick up my packet yesterday. But the race was well organized, and the course was very clear with plenty of volunteers. Can't wait to do this race again. Last updated: 2011-06-05 12:00 AM

The family came with me today. This was an ideal race to watch me, but they were really bored. So I probably won't encourage them again. But it was really nice to see them so much during the race.
Just a small swim to the start to get a feel for the water.
