Swim
Comments: i didn't take last!! someone was 1:30 behind me, although it sucked since i was like the 10th to last person to start and 8 of the 9 behind me didn't put their accurate swim times and passed me. i probably lost 30 seconds to a minute having to stop and pull up and let them pass me. i was way too hurried before i started. i couldn't get my stopwatch reset to zero after several attempts and so didn't get my in the pool swim time. i'm guessing it was between 12 and 12:30 which is a good time for me. it was my fastest competitive swim time. because i was hurried, i dove in and my goggles filled with water. i needed to tighten them, but didn't have time to do so. i stopped at the end of the first length to reset my goggles, i got passed at that point. the last half or third of the swim was great without getting passed and finding my rhythm. they had a nice warm up pool at the end of the lap pool What would you do differently?: GOOD 1. practiced swimming and improved my stroke and my time 2. took energy gel IMPROVE 1. have stopwatch ready for in pool time 2. give myself enough time to get ready to swim, i was way too hurried 3. determine start type (dive, jump in, etc) and have my goggles set Transition 1
Comments: 48th of 90, last in my age group 7 seconds behind. i had planned to swim with a tight orange polyester shirt and then just put on a bib belt, but their were no vendors at the race to buy a bib belt from so i safety pinned my bib to my red hegdablu tri team shirt and put that on during t1. i first toweled myself off to so the shirt would go on easier. it wasn't a bad t1, but it wasn't a good one either. i'm sure i can cut some time off What would you do differently?: 1. swim with orange polyester shirt 2. get bib belt 3. consider cycling in running shoes to reduce t2 a. put left combo pedal on bike b. consider buying some tri shoes to wear with out socks and put on fast Bike
Comments: decent, solid ride. my seat was a little high and i started to feel a little chaffing during the last third even though i had used some chamois cream. i passed a few riders. never got my right foot to click into the pedal. didn't seem to bother me What would you do differently?: 1. see if cycling with running shoes and not clicking in slows me down 2. get my ave mph up to 17 or 18 Transition 2
Comments: 86th of 90, last in my age group by 47 seconds. i was slow. i couldn't get my bike to rack up well since i was late and had it against a temporary fence. i should be able to cut a minute off of this time. What would you do differently?: 1. if i still use biking shoes, try getting out of them before i stop cycling, while i'm still riding at full speed 2. if i cycle in my running shoes, then i just have run the bike in, rack it, remove helmet and run. Run
Comments: i was 8:15 behind the next guy in my age and 5:12 ahead of the guy behind me in my age group. it was great because daw greeted me at the beginning of the run as she had finished her short course. she was also there at the end of the run cheering me on. it was a great daddy daughter time together overall. i rand steady and had a strong finish. i was cheering other runners on that were ahead of me and heading down the home stretch. i want to get my run down to under 10 minute miles What would you do differently?: continue to run and get time down to under 10 minutes a mile Post race
Warm down: water and grapes and daw's smiling face What limited your ability to perform faster: due to trip to st gorge, although i did run (x1), bike (x2), swim (x2), and hike a lot, it broke up my regular schedule and workout environment. the pool was too short (maybe 13 yds) and shallow on either end and had stairs on each end instead of walls to push off of. the cycling was in traffic on roads i didn't know well. the running was alright. also, need to be ready to go the night before, get a good night's sleep, and give myself plenty of time to set up on race day. Event comments: STRENGTHS 1. good accurate timing for each stage and transition 2. well organized 3. nice afterrace party/awards ceremony at godfathers pizza IMPROVE 1. have an athena/clydsdate group for women over 165 lbs and men over 200 lbs and let them start the swim first followed by the fastest swimmers.or have the 20 slowest swimmers start first. this gives some of the slower athletes a chance to finish in the middle of the pack instead of at the end. its frustrating to be one of the last finishers to come in and find that the event has all but closed shop and everyone is already at godfathers for the awards ceremony. 2. get sponsor/grant/funds to have bottles of water and gatorade at the end for the finishers 3. get vendor(s) with triathlon equipment Last updated: 2011-06-05 12:00 AM

BAD NEWS!! got to the race late and did allow ourselves (daw and me) enough time to properly set up. we had got home from a trip to st. gorge early wednesday morning, i went to work, coached a double header softball game on thursday night, took baby k over to the local pool on friday night and didn't have my stuff ready to go. i had most of it stored in my 6 gallon tri bucket, but taken that to st gorge with us and had filled it up with the boys extra clothes so my tri stuff was not all in one place. i was up late getting it together and went to bed about 11 or 12 and then got up at 5 to finish getting everything ready and head for our hour and a half drive to norfolk. we didn't get to norfolk until 7:40, registered and got our bib numbers, attended the mandatory meeting, raced out to get my bike together and get our bibs/numbers in place and get our bikes over to the closed transition area while the first swimmers were going. finally got to the pool with about 5 minutes to go before my swim.
took an gu energy gel about 20 minutes before the swim
