Swim
Comments: Overall a good swim for me. Felt strong, got a little hung up in a group initially, but once things opened up I felt good. What would you do differently?: warmup more before hand, increase the water temp! Transition 1
Comments: used a stripper for the first time. They struggled to get my suit off, even though I got on the ground for them... Got up and was confused about where to go. What would you do differently?: I dont think I would do much different, experience will make that easier the next time. Bike
Comments: Good bike for me. I am getting faster each time I get out on my bike. Tried to bike harder going down hills. I think this helped me a lot. Going up hills does seem to be something I am getting better at though. I passed few people... But most of the passing I did was going up hills. Start of bike was tough though, I was cold. I wore a long sleeve shirt on the bike that I also wore during the swim. I think this was smart. Feet were very cold the whole ride more or less though. What would you do differently?: I dont think I would have done too much differently. Again, wish it was warmer... Feet covers are probably a real solid investment. Transition 2
Comments: ok transition i think. again experience will make it better. What would you do differently?: i think i just need to setup my transitions a bit better. focus on this in sprints. Run
Comments: Overall happy with my run. Should have been better though... I had to pee the entire run. Thought I could just fight through it, but I dont think that was smart. I started fast first 2 miles at like a 7.30, then slowed. I think the slowing down was a result of really needing to pee. When I finally peed mile 10 I think, I couldnt pee. Then I got hit with the need for a #2... So I had to sit down and TCB. Not a complete nightmare, but not something I wanted to have to do during a race. Not sure why this happened, I did go in the AM, but probably didnt go enough. Added 3 minutes to my run. If I do poop, need to poop faster! Also I kinda stomach cramped on the bike a bit, strange cause I never do that. On the run though I was fine. I think it was a bathroom issue again. For hydration/nutrition I think I did pretty well, but the need to pee may have prevented some wanting to drink. Used the sponges very effectively. Had 2 gus. 1 at 20 minute mark and 1 at 1:20 mark or around there. Had a real strong finish. Ran with a guy Tom from Long Island who is doing Placid. Hope I see him there, we both paced each other very well. My guess is I was running 20 seconds faster than I would have by myself, no exaggeration. Had a strong kick to finish. Or at least I felt like I did. Tom said to me at about a 1/4 left, ok good running with you, you can go ahead and kick now. I actually didnt plan on kicking, but he motivated me to do that too. What would you do differently?: If I have to pee or worse, stop right away. I convinced myself to do it finally because I wanted to enjoy myself running. Cant enjoy my run when I am very uncomfortable. Also I was gasy. Farting on the course was kinda funny though. I dusted 1 chick, not intentionally, but ya know. I missed water at the first aid station, the guy in front of me took 2 cups! I think I needed that first water. Only drank water while running, had gatorade once, but was more comfortable with water. Started to use the sponges at about mile 3, felt great, like the idea of using them more. Start slower! I felt real good in the beginning, but I really need to focus on not being sub 8 for my first couple miles, unless I can do it the whole race. I think 1st mile its fine to be excited, but I need to settle down quicker. I think the nutrition every hour thing worked. Gus were great on the run. Post race
Warm down: sat in the cold lake and chilled. stretched for a bit after What limited your ability to perform faster: bathroom need and cold i think. also i am sometimes a baby. need to toughen up! Event comments: I think this was a tough course for me and a tough race. But I enjoyed it. I am definitely doing more halfs. I would like to improve my time and think I definitely will. Slept 2 miles from venue, very good move. Ate some barley salad thing for dinner and some beef jerky. Carb loaded, but probably could have done a better job of planning a good pre-race meal. Slept pretty good.
Ate banana and a cliff bar for breakfast. Morning was cold.
Biked 2 miles to transition, nice and easy.
Real short swim right before wave went off. Water was 60C.
