Swim
Comments: Five minutes into the swim, I took in a mouth full of water and choked. I was impressed with how I kept going and would cough underwater and struggle to breath without missing a stroke. Going out, my lines were great. Coming back, the sun was in my eyes which was not too bad, but it seemed like I could not keep a straight line. I zig zagged a little. I felt strong the whole time in the swim once I either warmed up or my face, hands and feet got so numb that I didn't care about the cold. I could have swam another lap at the same pace EASILY! What would you do differently?: I should have put anti fog protection on my glasses to help see better. Also, I think I might be a little scared to really try hard on the swim not because I am afraid of burning out during the swim or later in the race, but I think I might have an irrational fear of bumping into swimmers. Next time I think I just might go a little faster at the risk of running into more swimmers???? I know I can finish that distance in 30 minutes no problem. Transition 1
Comments: I hate my shoes. They have a buckle on them that makes it hard to get in and out of and I am going to get a new pair that just has velcro. For now on all equipment purchases will be pre-approved by Colin. What would you do differently?: As I was running to the start of the bike, I ran threw mud which made it very difficult when I tried to clip into my pedal. I had to bang my shoes on the pavement a couple times before they would actually fit into the clip. I would rank my T1 as below average only because of my shoes. Everything else went average. Bike
Comments: I tried my best to keep within z2 and z3 for the majority of the bike. I consumed almost two sleeves of shock blocks and stomach felt very good the whole ride. I had to stop and pee at the top of the hill on the 2nd loop (color was clear). Felt that was a good time to help reduce my HR and releave myself. As I was preparing to come in from the bike I remember being excited to start the run becasue I honest felt like I was going to kill it. I felt like my race management up until the end of the bike was flawless. What would you do differently?: I should have taken in more fluids during the bike. I only drank about 1.25 bottles of water. I don't think that was enough because I fell flat at mile 10 on the run. The bumps were so bad on the downhill that I lost one of my bottles. Transition 2
Comments: One half mile before dismount I took my shoes off and rode with my feet on top of the shoes. I stopped the bike to get off and ran from the dismount to the rack. My legs felt great and I was ready to hit the run. I was actually excited to start the run with how good my legs felt. What would you do differently?: Maybe next time try to dismount the bike while it is moving. I can't believe I did T2 in 1:30. Not to shabby for someone who does not practice transitions. It felt a lot longer than that. Run
Comments: I felt increadibly strong at the start of the run. I was convinced that I could average sub-8's the whole way. At mile 2 or 3 I stopped to pee again (color was clear). One of my weaknesses is running in the heat. It did get warm and I don't think it got very hot, but on the 2nd lap, I started to feel off. It was at mile 10 and approx 1/2 after the killer hill that I had to walk and regroup. My right inner groin started to hurt, but that was not the reason why I started to walk. The pain in the groin actually went away towards the end. I kept my heart rate in zone 2 145- 154 so I could finish strong. What would you do differently?: I don't think I drank enought the week leading up to the race. I don't think I drank enought during the bike. I think I should experiment with hammer products (or something similar) to help prevent me from fading on the run. I never felt sick to my stomach, but I did pass gas several times during the run with never the urge to go #2. Maybe that was telling me something. Not sure. I was physically prepared for the run, but maybe not nutritionally? Post race
Warm down: Define "warm down". If you consider staggering from the finish to the food tent, then yes I did a warm down. Otherwise, I did nothing. The question is "could I do a warm down". The answer is no. What limited your ability to perform faster: 1. My goggles were not perfect. I could have done a better job sighting on the return trip back to the beach with the sun in my eyes if they were not so damn foggy. 2. I think hydration the week leading up to the race and during the bike and maybe better nutrition. Note: I need to do stregth training. My tricep muscles (or middle head muscles) are sore the day after along with the back of my leg below the gluteus maximus. Event comments: The question on "overall course based on my ability" is a difficult one to answer. For the sake of pride, I have to say just right, but you would have to be a fool to say too easy. Went to bed to 11 (Bruins Game) and woke up at 4:15. At 4:30 I ate a bagel alley bagel with peanut butter and 1/4 bottle of water. Hit the porta johns twice and felt very good before the start of the swim.
None. Way to damn cold.
