Swim
Comments: Didn't feel like this was my best tri swim, but I will take it. Didn't do any drafting, but did lead out Nikki who did an excellent job of staying on my feet the whole way. It looked like there were more yellow caps in front of me, but I will take a 5th place swim considering the circumstances. Still want to have a 1st place swim some day. Lots of contact and it never seemed to thin out. I did a great job of holding my line and not letting other swimmers bully me out of position. What would you do differently?: I'm not going to complain or nit-pick my performance today. Just getting to the starting line and then finishing was an accomplishment in itself. Transition 1
Comments: Jogged to transition then walked while in transiton. Just trying to settle down and get focused. What would you do differently?: Hustle. Bike
Comments: Did not like the new bike course, but that wasn't the primary reason for my slow performance. Just wanted to maintain a good pace and try to stay focused. Garmin was dead this morning, so I was riding blind...and I did not like that feeling at all. Got passed a lot, but fortunately I did pass at least a few cyclists as to not completely destroy my confidence. What would you do differently?: "Race" the bike portion next time. Transition 2
Comments: Don't even remember T2...looks like it was reasonably fast. What would you do differently?: Hustle. Run
Comments: Was it just me or did the run course seem short? Wish I had my Garmin to confirm. If it was accurately 3 miles, then wow...I am very proud of this performance...a tri PR run pace by almost 90". The first two miles I just wanted to stay at a comfortable steady pace. Starting Mile 3, I picked up the pace, then red-lined the last 800. What would you do differently?: I could have probably run the first 2 miles a little faster. Post race
Warm down: Walked over to the food table to enjoy some Papa John's pizza...my favorite post-race indulgence! What limited your ability to perform faster: Tough week leading up to race day. Making the decision to put Taylor to sleep the day before definitely carried a lot of emotional weight on race day.At several points I just wanted to give up and cry. Video job Saturday night and a later than normal pre-race bedtime...fell asleep sometime after midnight. Lots of time on the road traveling this week, plus additional work and personal stress all piling up. Decided to race, though, as to not bear the burden of regretting not racing. Somehow, this was a course PR for me by more than 2:00...so with everything considered, I have to smile about that. Event comments: Not the best version of this race (my 3rd year to do this one). Still, well organized. A few minutes late getting started. Excellent volunteer and police support. I made sure to say thank you or give a friendly nod as I passed each of them. Plenty of aid stations. New bike course = FAIL. Too much cornering, turning, and the additional 1/2 loop created some confusion and dangerous cross-traffic between 1st and 2nd loopers. On-site results were a pain and not updated. Results were listed on a scrolling computer monitor...tough to see and did not have my results listed even after about 45 minutes from my finish. Race shirts this year appeared to be of cheaper quality compared to the Brooks shirts from the past two years. Last updated: 2011-06-07 12:00 AM

Up at 4:50, ate 3/4 of a PBB wrap. Drank some water and Gatorde leading up to the race start.
Spent the night at a hotel after a late night of video work...this afforded me a couple extra hours of sleep.
Easy spin from parking to transition. Short 1/2-ish mile jog, 2-300 easy swim.
