Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30, ate banana and oatmeal and had a little coffee. Parking at event was rough which caused us to be a little later than I hoped so setup was rushed.
Event warmup:

Swam about 50m
Swim
  • 25m 22s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started off ok, but quickly realized I couldn't see well at all. Spit and rinsed goggles to avoid fogging but the wetness of the lenses caused everything to be unclear. Looked up way too much, did breastroke to sight better, was inside the buoys a couple times....I think all that stressed me out and made my heartrate go even higher than it would have. Was gassed 1/2 way through and cursing to myself. At least it was not too congested, hardly had any contact. Was able to draft the last 200m or so. Can't believe I wasn't slower than I was time-wise...happy with the time all things considered.
What would you do differently?:

New goggles so I can SEE, train more in the swim so 1500m wasn't so difficult. Seemed harder than even my IM swim last year.
Transition 1
  • 03m 44s
Comments:

Not very fast, as usual. I was gassed and was more concerned about getting heartrate down.
What would you do differently?:

Not grab the wrong helmet and sunglasses, move faster.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 27s
  • 23.61 miles
  • 21.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Quads were on fire starting off, maybe due to 300 yard primarily uphill run to transition from swim and the first part of bike being slightly uphill. Was thinking that I felt terrible and bike would suffer. About 3/4 way through first loop started feeling a little better but heartrate never settled down. Because of that I didn't feel like I could tolerate gel, but probably should have taken one.

At no point during the ride did I think I'd exceed my expectations based on how I was feeling, but ended up at just under 22mph so I was happy.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder maybe, not "give up" mentally at the beginning, take gel
Post race
Warm down:

groin muscle was killing me, probably thanks to doing breastroke a few times, so just limped around and got some food

What limited your ability to perform faster:

giving up mentally during the swim and first part of the bike......need to HTFU

Event comments:

Good volunteers and security on bike course, but not much direction from RD's pre-race
