Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4AM. I ate a bagel, cliff bar, and banana. I also sipped on gaterade. I took a shower and got my stuff ready to go. I didn't feel to well and felt heavy from the dinner the night before. I had a burger, fries, and macaroni. The burger would have been fine but we were at a resteraunt so probably saturated in grease. Bad move! I took a taxi from the hotel to the event. I had to walk 1 mile since there was a line of traffic so I had only 1 hr before start time.
Swim

  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went well. I wasn't tired after it and I felt good coming out of the water. I thought I did better than my time indicates since it seemed like I was passing a lot of people. I got tied up with other swimmers a lot whiched slowed me way down. I got kicked and dunked as well.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

I am slow at transition....something I can improve on. The transition area was really tight. I didn't have much room to remove my stuff, etc.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transtitions
Bike

Comments:

I had a rough bike and depressing bike. I lost my garmin in the 1st 5 minutes. I looked down at my wrist to see how fast I was going...gone....fell off. I was so depressed. I think this deflated me and didn't make me push harder. I fogot about losing the watch 1/4 way through. I made it up the 1st big hill but felt like I was going to puke....HR must have been high. I settled back down and started to ride normally. I made it to the flat stretch of the course and I was cruising a long. I started to get nutrition in and slowed up a bit. I lady passed me while I was doing this and I got back on aerobars to start to ride. And next thing I know a motorcycle pulls up and gives me a red card for drafting. I honestly wasn't trying to draft. I was so bummed. I couldn't believe it. I would be the 1st to admit if I was drafting and I don't play like that. I passed her after this....I was so mad. It almost like I was set up or something. This really affected my motivation. I didn't care about my time anymore because I knew I had a 4 min. penately coming my way. I know I was riding slower than I can because of this. I made the 2nd time around with the big hill with no problems...felt great. I got to mile 40 and bit the penately box. This seemed like forever. My muscles tightened up and felt humilating to see all the other bikers go by. I proceeded along trying to forget what happened.
What would you do differently?:

Things happen and I need to forget about it. Enjoy the moment and bike harder.
Transition 2
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Ok...I almost ran off with no socks.
What would you do differently?:

Have socks in shoes not in bag....forgot to do this before race started.
Run
  • 1h 49m 29s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

The run is my strong point and it ended up being my worst of all three sports. I was good for the 1st mile then I had to go pee. I ran the next 2 miles at what seemed a good pace. Then I got major cramps in my stomache. It defiently affected my running. I proceeeded along and then boinked at mile 7. I felt like a brick trying to run. I also was struggling with cramps. I had to walk every mile for 30-60 secs. I managed to finish the last 1.5 miles strong. I also threw up in my mouth and my stomach was sloshing around.
What would you do differently?:

Focus on nutrition on the bike and find something that doesn't slosh around in my stomache.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition...I assume, losing watch, penately on bike, and desire. I need to foucs on the mental effort some more. I learned a lot about myself and now know I need to push harder.

Event comments:

Overall, I had a good time(even though the race report seems depressing). I learned a lot about the mental aspect of the sport. The best part was seeing my family at the finish line so proud of me. I will learn from my mistakes and now I know what I need to fix. It was my 1st HIM so I know I can do better next time!
