Swim
Comments: I dont know what it is with me and OWS this year. I didnt get a good line and had to go around a lot of people and ended up swallowing some water before the first turn. There were already people in the wave in front of me treading water and I seem to run into every one of them. Was a little out of breath rounding the first buoy. Maybe I am going out too fast or the adrenaline gets to me, but my form went to crap and I felt like I was all over the place. Once I rounded the final buoy, I seem to settle in and get in a better rhythm. It was really shallow approaching the finish and most people were walking. Once it was too shallow, I did a few dolphin dives the rest of the way in. I think they said the measured distance ended around half way between final buoy and the shoreline. Although the timing mat was on the shore up to T1. What would you do differently?: I really need a few more OWS swims as part of my training. Transition 1
Comments: For some reason they didnt have my T1 and Bike time, so basing this off my Garmin and compared to others that I was near. I think its pretty close. It really helped having wetsuit trimmed down. I was able to get it off quickly and get my helmet and shoes on. transition area was very wet and sandy/rocky so decided it was better to put shoes on in T1 rather than run barefoot and jump on bike with shoes already clipped in (didnt want rocks in shoes). It was a little slower, but not that bad and I Was able to get going pretty quickly. What would you do differently?: not much. Bike
Comments: Again, they didnt have my official bike time so basing this off my Garmin and my compared to others I was near. This was an ok bike for me. My legs felt a little tired. Sprints are hard for me since it takes me a while to get warmed up. There was one hill, but not too bad. I probably took it a little too slow. Nate passed me near the top of the hill. Was hoping to follow closer, but felt more lactic in my legs that I wanted and decided not to push it so I could have a good run. I was also pretty sure there was nobody in front of me for my AG. Went all out on the down hill and flats into T2. Topped out at 45.3mph and avg 26.8mph for last 4.3 miles. Legs feeling better. What would you do differently?: not much. This is the end of my season and biking has tapered off recently. I think the one thing I should do is spend more time on my tri bike, but it was hard to fit in. Transition 2
Comments: Average T2. still room for improvement, but nothing went wrong. What would you do differently?: not much Run
Comments: I really wanted to have a good run. Started off a little fast and slowed it a bit at around .5 mile mark. I felt pretty good, but still knew I would be hurting near the finish. I wanted to save a little in case someone in my AG past me and my plan was to go full out the last mile. The first part was thru the woods and I was nervous that I went the wrong way since I was alone and didnt see any volunteers either. Finally came up to a volunteer who told be to go left so headed left and out of the park. At the turn around I saw Randy and Jim about 15-20 seconds behind me and Randy past me quickly. I tried to follow him closely and kept waiting for Jim to pass me too. I know he is usually a faster runner than me. But since he is in my AG, I did everything I could to keep my pace up. I think it helped to follow Randy. I made final turn into the park and looked back and didnt see anyone. It was a great feeling. I was pretty sure I would beat my goal and be top 1-2 in my AG. And as luck would have it, I came in at 1:09 and was first in my AG. Yahoo! My first AG win. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and talked to the rest of my club (Blue Steel Tri Club) and others. Drank a few waters and a powerade. Great post race meal. They had a brunch with made to order omelets, hash browns and pastries. They had waffles also. Great idea and it tasted great. Hung around for award ceremony. Our club came in first for the club championship. We had a great showing and took a lot of podium spots for AG's and 3rd overall for Men and 1st overall for Women. Great Job Everyone! All in all, a great race. Oh ya, the blueberry cobbler was a nice touch. Event comments: Overall it was a great race. Post race meal was outstanding. Well run and a nice setting. Only real complaint was only having 2 port-a-potties. Not the cleanest either. Last updated: 2011-06-13 12:00 AM

Up at 4:30. Quick Shower, Ate Cereal and a Yogurt and headed out the door at 5:00am. 2 hour drive to get there and ate a bagel with peanut butter and drank a coffee on the way. Found a nice parking spot since I was early. Checked in. Lots of mosquitoes. Wish I put of bug spray. Ground still really wet from the recent rain. Put race numbers on belt, bike and helmet. Mixed up my HEED and headed to Transition. Once I Was set up, I Ate a clif bar and a banana and drank some HEED.
Around 8:30, carried wetsuit over to start area for pre-race meeting.
While putting my wetsuit on, I put a big tear at the bottom of each leg of my wetsuit. Not sure why that happened, especially with both. Maybe it was too dry. Decided it was best to cut my wetsuit above calf so it would be easier to get of in T1 and wouldn't tear and get worse. A nice woman heard me looking for some scissors and offered to let me use her pocket knife which had a scissors. One of the race officials had a pair also so it worked out. May need a new wetsuit next year though.
My goal for the race was to break 1:11 and be first or second in my AG. I knew first was a real possibility and would be my first AG win.
Swam a few hundred yards. Still not enough, but better than nothing
