Swim
Comments: Wow. Water was borderline putrid. I've swam in better stock tanks. Lake weeds wrapped around my timing chip about 50 feet into the swim and stayed there for the rest of the race. Could barely see my own hands, much less the feet or bodies of people around me, so drafting was not an option. What would you do differently?: Have the town invest in goose poop management and underwater landscaping. Transition 1
Comments: Nice run from the lake to T1. Very pretty and downhill through well manicured grass. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: I have not trained hills this year, so this kicked my butt a little. I loved bombing the downhills, as I usually passed most of the people who went past me on the uphills. One 12 year old girl was just smoking me on the uphills, but she did not have enough "silverback" weight to compete with my gravitational force. What would you do differently?: Train hills more. Transition 2
Comments: Still getting used to getting the VFF's on in a more speedy manner. What would you do differently?: get straighter toes. Run
Comments: Took it really easy, as work/training mix has not been ideal recently. However, I was not thinking I was taking it this easy. I have to learn how to suffer more and suck it up. On a brighter note, I did add one more story to my triathlon lore. As I was running towards the end and just beginning to add some speed very late, I somehow managed to trip over my own right foot and did a rolling somersault on the road. I was only about 600 yards from the end, so there were quite a few spectators there, and I heard their cheers morph into a unified horrified gasp and one loud "OH S***." I bounded back to my feet and kept on running. As I was about 100 yards out I heard footfalls approaching me, and remembering how I got outkicked on my last race by someone in my AG to lose by 3/4 of a second, I kicked it into a full-out sprint and beat the guy behind me. It turns out "the guy" was a 15 year old kid, so it felt a little better. ;) What would you do differently?: Push harder from the beginning...left way too much in the tank. Post race
Warm down: Hung out with Kristin and her hubby and got my favorite post-race food: grapes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of consistent training. Event comments: Only reason I did not give this race 4 stars was the condition of the water on the swim. Logistically and leadership wise, this was an excellent race. Close to home race, so up at 4:30 and at site by 5:45.
Pre-race swim in pure ickiness. This was definitely not ocean water.
