Sunny
Total Time = 1h 11m 26s
Overall Rank = 103/850
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 7/19
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4am, drank a gatorade and ate a bagel and banana.
Event warmup:

Ran a half mile and stretched.
Swim
  • 12m 53s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

My best swim so far. The current helped, and I was able to draft off people for about half the distance. Did a good job of going straight and sticking close to the buoys. Also angled directly at the ramp on shore after the last buoy. Several people stayed too long in the middle of the river and tried to make a right angle, which meant they had to fight the current.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe go harder and increase stroke rate to take advantage of the current.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Went smooth, first time I've quickly gotten the suit off my heels.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 31m 13s
  • 11 miles
  • 21.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Not too much traffic on the first loop and it was very fast. The crowd started building on the second lap and by the third lap it was packed. Many time it was four abreast when multiple passes occurring simultaneously. Lost speed on corners because of the crowd. The rough return on Seltice was littered with bottles from all the jarring. The section through Riverstone was more technical and fun with all the turns, but you had to really be on your toes with all the traffic.
What would you do differently?:

Would have been nice to go harder, but with all the traffic it was prudent to take it easy at times.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Came upon the dismount line much sooner than expected, came around a corner and there it was. Had to hustle to get my feet out before dismount. Barely got the second shoe off by the time I had to jump off and in the rush I knocked a shoe off - but I only had to go back a couple of feet to get it and only lost a couple of seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Scope out the approach to the dismount line before the race and pick a spot to start taking off shoes.
Run
  • 25m 17s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Started with a good pace off the bike. The calves were tight for the first half mile but I was able to stretch them a little as I ran. Incresed pace and got down to a 7:41 for the last mile. Would have liked to average under 8:00, but was happy with my best run so far.
What would you do differently?:

Apply the pace of my third mile earlier, like after the first mile.
Post race
Warm down:

A little stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing, felt this was pretty close to maximum speed given the crowds on the bike course.

Event comments:

If they can change the bike course to eliminate the rough rode on Seltice, this would be an excellent course.
