Swim
Comments: (rank out of 147 W) Swim felt good but not as fast as I would have like. Felt comfortable entire time. Didn't push is off the start, probably part of my time issue but I was nervous about going out too hard since I only had one short open water swim this season. Had a calf cramp about half way on the way back when I quickly had to avoid a back stroker. Had to drag my leg for a while to stop it. What would you do differently?: Pushed a little hard off the line and tried some dolphin diving through the shallows. Start my watch when I start the race would have been nice too. Transition 1
Comments: Long run to transition and took the extra time to put on a long sleeve shirt and long finger gloves. (yes, it was worth it) Gave me time to struggle out of my too small wetsuit arms. Leg came off slowly and stuck at my spot in transition. Took a couple tries to clip in to my petals at the mounting location What would you do differently?: Need to practice getting on my bike faster and I know for sure that I will use the wetsuit strippers in Door County. Bike
Comments: (ramk out of 147 W) Felt good but the turns really slowed me down and hard to maintain momentum. Slower then I would have liked but considuring the course, I'm realitively happy. Sciatic nerve pain hit at about mile 20. Never had it on the bike before, did some standing to releive the pain and discomfort. Makes me nervous for my upcoming trianing and race What would you do differently?: Need to gain confidence in my cornering and keeping up the speed. Hill work went well and stayed in my drops most of the race. Transition 2
Comments: Feet were frozen coming off the bike. Really noticed it when I tried to get my running shoes on. Took off my extra layers - though was still quite cool through out the run. Struggled to get my nike band on - this was a trial to see how bad it would be. I need to practice that more if I want to do it in the future. What would you do differently?: Dismount came up faster then I thought and I did not have time to undo my shoes for a quicker dismount and shoe transition. Needed to think that through more, maybe ride through the the area prior to the race to get a better feel for the distances when under speed. Run
Comments: (out of 147 W) Started out pretty slow but was able to build my speed up as I went. Drank water pretty well but had to practice some of my swimming/acidental water intake reactions when I nosed a cup of water pretty bad. Happy that my leg/butt felt pretty decent after the pain on the bike and the calf cramp from the swim never came back. Last half of the run was much better then the first. Wasn't expecting much out of this leg so I'm happy with it. What would you do differently?: Probably could have started some of my last half pick up sooner Post race
Warm down: Had a water, orange, banana and bagel pieces at the finish. Did some walking and started to go back to transition to gather my stuff and call home. Took my time cleaning up and did quite a bit of walking around. Enjoyed a burger and saw some of the awards. Sat on an ice pack for about and hour of my ride home. Apparently rehydrated well with water and gatarade since I had to stop twice on the way home to go to the bathroom. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nagging injury and didn't push as hard as I could. Didn't taper going into the race since this is a training/practice race for my half iron in July. Need to access running shoes for sockless running - huge arch blisters Event comments: Course was very challenging but fun and interesting. Definately will considure it for next year. Beutiful resort. Last updated: 2011-06-13 12:00 AM

Up at 3:15 for shower and pack-up. Ate a egg sandwich, coffee and water on the drive up - 1.5 hours. Arrived right before 5:30 and got a good parking spot and checked in quickly without incident.
Set-up transition and discussed the weather (as it started raining) and the pros and cons of putting on layers for the bike. Walked through the bike in/out and run in/out and checked out the water entrance and exit.
Did a small swim to make sure I wouldn't be shocked by the water - it wasn't too bad. Kept my shoes on until the last minute to stay warm. Seemed like a lot of standing around waiting to start. In the last group of people to go. Ate a Cliff bar and a Gatarade Prime about an hour/hour and a half before race start.
