Pre-race routine:

Spent 2 days prior rocking out Cedar Point! Stayed at the Breakers hotel which was yards from the swim start. Walked to transition in the morning and setup, walked back and watched the Full Rev atheletes start. Was a nice leisurly morning as we didnt start until a full hour after the Full Rev people. Went back to the hotel room and chilled out for a bit, walked to the start 15 minutes or so before the race.
Event warmup:

No real warmup, took some pictures and hung out in the sand waitning to race.
Swim
  • 43m 58s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swimming is my Achillies Heel so I just went out and did my thing. I've swam maybe 4 times this year, 2 in the pool and 2 in open water and never in my wetsuit. Obviusly my time should be much lower but I didn't really put the training in so I can't complain. I didn't really get warmed up until the first turn bouy and then it was just smooth sailing along.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, swim faster
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Ran past a lot of people walking from the swim to T1, not sure what that was about. Wetsuit strippers rock and had mine off in no time. Grabbed my bike gear and headed out. According to the timing I passed like 32 people in transition from 269 to 237. Hurry up people!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, Im pretty good at transitioning.
Bike
  • 2h 43m 7s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike is my strong suit so I went out fast. First 20 miles or so was pretty flat but then the rolling hills started. I averaged about 22mph through the first 20 miles and then 20mph thereafter. Like swimming, I've only been on my bike about 4 or 5 times this summer and my longest ride was 40 miles. I really started feeling that lack of bike fitness toward the end of the ride coupled with the hills. Virginia Beach is pancake flat so wasn't used to that. I did hit my nutrition right on and finished my 750 cal bottle in the last few miles of the ride. I used all of the bike aid stations to grab a water bottle and use that for hydration. Was nice carrying only one bottle. Didn't need to hydrate too much though as it was a cool cloudy day on the bike. All in all I can't complain about a 20.6 average, and making up 80 overall places and 10 division places on hardly any training.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, ride faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Pretty straight forward T2. Was excited to get the hell off my bike. I am usually a little faster in T2, but forgot to pre-tie my shoes so I had to take care of that. Too used to running in my Vibrams now a days. Only made up 5 places in T2 =/
What would you do differently?:

Remember to pre-tie my shoes or get those elastic laces I used to have
Run
  • 2h 07m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Ah the run. Running is definitely my favorite sport, although not my strongest RE: bike or my weakest RE: swim. It just kind of hangs out in the middle. I PR'd my half marathon time the weekend before this race with a 1:44:30 at the Rock N Roll Half Marathon Va Beach. I've definitely been running more this summer than I have biking and swimming, but still not really consistant. Therefore I can't complain about my 2:07. I know that my bike fitness hurt my run and if I had been in top bike shape I could have been closer to my 1:45.

The first 6.55 went by pretty quick and I think I was on about a 9 minute pace. Then the sun came out and I started getting really hot. I lost 2 of my 4 GU's out of the back of my jersey at some point so I had to improvise a little on the nutrition. I think I still did well taking in a cup of gatorade at each stop while pouring water cup over my head. I also grabbed a cup of ice at each stop and just scooped the ice out and held it in my hands while I ran. Anything to keep cool!
What would you do differently?:

Once again, train more regulary, get faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished carrying the USA flag across the finish line. That was cool and definitely an honor on 9/11.

Met up with Peg my love and hung out waiting for my buddy Paul to finish while continually trying to keep cool.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training this year. Heat in the latter part of the run.

Event comments:

This was my first Rev 3 race and it was good. It was a little more amped up due to their also being a Full distance going on at the same time. Still not WTC quality, but getting there. There were pros on site, but I think most of the big names were in Las Vagas for the World Champs that were the same weekend. Regarless Cedar Point is a great venue for a race, the roller coaster lineup is legendary.
