Swim
Comments: After my last race, where I got very disoriented on the swim, I was very happy with how this went. I had been practicing sighting in open water and this practice paid off. The water was nice and warm and I really enjoyed the swim up until the very last portion, which was like swimming through a jungle (milfoil). I felt kind of tangled up in it, but I just kept pushing through. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. For me, this was a very good performance. Transition 1
Comments: I am a little surprised at how long my T1 time is - it didn't seem that long. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Overall, I felt like T1 went perfectly for me. Bike
Comments: Oddly, I was tired from the very start of the bike - I mean my legs were tired. This has not happened to me in my two previous races. I wanted to start out easy, Z1-2 and then push harder for the last half of the course. But, my HR was high the whole time and I just felt fatigued. But, at one point, I just decided not to worry about it and enjoy the view from the bridge, including Mt. Rainier. Was so pretty! My pace was slower than my last race, which had a hillier bike course. And I have been training more on the bike. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Maybe it was just an off day. Transition 2
Comments: Went fine. Run
Comments: As I came out of T2, there was Drake. So nice to see him! I felt pretty good on the run - better than on the bike. Again, I just decided to enjoy the beautiful route and keep a steady pace, which I did until the hill. Yikes. I ran up it, slowly, but it was tough. Only one other person was running up it at that point. On my way down it, I didn't see anyone running up it. There was a person 100 yards from the finish tell us we were almost there. At that point I picked up the pace and did a bit of a kick for the finish. What would you do differently?: Next year, I am going to practice running this route and doing that hill. Post race
Warm down: Just walked around, got some water, and then went over to the beach house where I changed into dry clothes. What limited your ability to perform faster: I'm not sure. I've thought about this a lot. I had hoped to see some improvement from my June 3 race in both the bike and run and that didn't happen. Maybe it was just not my day. Event comments: This is a beautiful race course and seemed very well-organized. I did, however, see some illegal drafting on the I-90 bridge. I am looking forward to doing it next year. Had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was toast with almond butter and jam - left the house about 5:00am for the race site. I was worried about the parking situation, so I am glad we got there early - the only place to park is in the surrounding neighborhood. Drake dropped my off right at the park with my bike and transition bag while he parked the van. After I got my transition are set up, we just hung out. Some Seafair pirates showed up (one was talking on a cell phone). I was in wave 11, so once the first wave went, we went down to the beach and waited there.
I swam a bit before the start. That was it.
