Swim
Comments: The first loop was shweet!!! I got kicked, punched, elbowed...it was awesome!! There was even a point where we all had to stop swimming because it got backed up! Drafting was going well, the water was clear and I could see the feet in front of me. FIRST LAP: 36-ish mins. SECOND LAP: 40ish mins. This was a lot worse for me. I didn't hop right back in the water and follow feet, I walked over 25 yards so I could swim stright out and let the current take me...bad idea somehow on the second loop I was always 25 meters to the right of the buoy and I was out there all alone so no drafting what-so-ever. I started getting closer to the buoys on the way back in and got water kicked in my mouth right as I took a deep breath...proped up coughing hardcore and a wave hit me right on another inhale...I fought my hardest not to throw up, and it worked...thank god!! Finished the swim and felt good, never out of breath and never felt like I was going uber hard. What would you do differently?: Draft more and sight better. Transition 1
Comments: HOLY CRAP this took forever. There was no space and about 200 dudes in this small tent. I found a gap, took out the towel and dried off. Put on the tube socks with the toes cut out, put them on as arm and leg warmers. Helmet, bike gloves, socks, and bike shoes go on and I'm out the tent. What would you do differently?: GO FASTER and skip the leg warmers because they were a pain in the ass to get off too. Bike
Comments: Whew this was a long ride, extended by my 8 or so pee breaks and my flat tire around mile 77. Let's talk about having nothing but headwind for the first 50miles...that sucked, for like 3hours I'm going 11-15 MPH, it was a mental battle, BUT I kept on smiling and I felt good. The best quote I heard on the bike as 2 guys past me one looks at the other and goes "I'm holding you PERSONALLY FUCKING RESPONSIBLE for this headwind!!" I almost fell off my bike I was laughing so hard. Nutrition was 3 bottles of 436cals of the same stuff I had for breakfast and 1 of 548cals. I also took on 3 gels at random times because I knew I was running short on the cal count due to the bike taking longer than expected. The first 2 436cal bottles I would take 2 drinks every 15min, Special Needs at mile 49 and I had to toss a bottle with 150cals left in it and picked up the 548cal bottle and another 436, I started with the heavier one and changed to 2 drinks every 7mins. Started nutrition 30mins into the bike and stopped with 30mins left in the bike. I was also drinking 1/2 bottle of water inbetween every aid station. Took off the leg warmers at mile 43 and arm warmers at 49. I flatted at mile 77, exactly 2 miles after I saw a girl walking her bike and asked "what's wrong" and she said she just need air...well I had 2 CO2's on me and turned around...quickly... and gave it to her, she was excited and I just said, "enjoy the rest of your race." So I had a slow flat 2 miles later...DAMN!! so I get the tire off and the tube, and as I'm putting on the new tube bike mantenance dudes show up...KARMA BABY!! They help me fix it, give me a new tube, and send me on my way...total change time 10mins. What would you do differently?: Work on my bike endurance overall...train harder...throw in more Century rides...Oh we're talking about the race... then just not wear leg warmers. Transition 2
Comments: Love having people rack your bike for you! Had someone hand me my gear bag and it was a basic change in the tent...I felt good, especially compaired to others who were just sitting in T2, almost to the point of passing out. What would you do differently?: notta Run
Comments: Plan for the run was to take on 1/2 a Hammer Gel every 30mins...yeah that lasted for 1 gel worth. After mile 6.5 I was done with gels and tossed the flask. I went right to chicken broth(DAMN GOOD), flat soda, gator endurance, and water. I was feeling pretty full after mile 6 so I took a break from food and just did water for a few miles. I felt damn good for the first 6.5 miles and was just walking the aid stations but running the rest. Around mile 8-10 I started feeling pretty rough and getting kind of cold! I started walking more and running less for the middle 13miles and was just trying to drink enough to trot out the last 6.5 miles and not collapse! Special Needs bad had a longsleeve, which was clutch, and another hammergel...left that in there, and in both my bike and run special needs bag I had my sister right me a note to make me smile and give me motivation...AWESOME IDEA!! I would pull out the notes when going through a really rough patch to pick up my mood and make me realize that I will finish and I will become an Ironman!! So I'm currently picking a landmark and walking there, finding another and shuffling there...repeat. The last 6.5 miles I was just playing a game of tag with #118, She'd pass me as I was walking, then she'd walk and I'd end up passing here...so I just started a game of tag to lighten the mood. It worked and I didn't see her again after mile 25 when I ran the rest of the way. I also took another 5+ pee breaks on the run...guess it was nice to see I was properly hydrated at least! This run was tough!! What would you do differently?: Do a few more brick workouts in training. Post race
Warm down: Walked around for a few before going to the massage tent. I ate a slice of supreme pizza while waiting...bad idea and ended up bailing on the massage because I felt if I laid down it would be bad. So I walked to meet up with my brother and sister in T-area...where I preceeded to throw up the pizza...cheese was a bad idea. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not to much, perhaps lack of endurance experiance...but tis all good! Event comments: I didn't stay around to watch everyone else finish, but I was hurting pretty bad and passed out as soon as I laid down on the couch, brother woke me up and I showered then went to bed. Woke up at 230am and took on 725cal mix of Carbo-Pro and Gator Endurance, this was probably the greatest idea every because I have troubles eating before a race because of nerves...but at 230am your not nervous and it was easy to put that down. Wake up again at 437am for good this time! Got my special needs bags together and headed out with my sister.
Nothing, streched and hung out in a hotel lobby with my sister because it was damn cold. Put on the wetsuit, watched the pros go with my sister then heaed into the corral...IT'S GO TIME!!
