Pre-race routine:

Ugh. What a mess. The group of 8 of us were out in a hotel in Gurnee. One girl overslept, but got ready in record time and we weren't running all that late. Then, I lost my keys. Couldn't find them. Anywhere. Checked the room, checked the hallway... I KNEW I had them, just no idea where. Finally decided to just go with one of my friends, leave my truck (which we would need later to haul 3 of the bikes) there and deal with it later. Talk about starting out stressed.

Got to the parking lot at the Greyhound racing place and parked. Did one last check of my stuff, and guess what? There were my keys - right in my suitcase. Have NO memory of putting them there. Sooo... at least I knew where my keys were, and would just have to worry about how to get the truck back to the venue later.

This part of the parking for the race went fairly smoothly. Not as long a wait to get into the parking lot as last year, and the shuttles ran pretty well.

Got to the venue, had about 45 minutes to set up my transition spot and get everything ready. Didn't have enough time to adequately figure out where my bike was in relationship to the swim exit.

Kicked out of transition area; went to swim start and got in the long port-a-potty line.
Event warmup:

Not much. Jumped up and down to get the blood moving when I was waiting for my turn to dive in. Had a gel about 30 minutes beforehand (thanks to Marcie who had an extra one since I forgot mine!!) Also took some Excedrin to try and keep my headache and really bad cramps to a minimum.
Swim
  • 17m 40s
  • 805 meters
  • 02m 12s / 100 meters
Comments:

Thought my swim was better than it turned out to be. My watch died midway through the swim, so I didn't know my time until I got home... really disappointed. Shouldn't be - it's not like I've spent a lot of time in the pool this season - and plus, no panic, no hyperventilating - but still, I wanted to be faster.
What would you do differently?:

Navigation continues to be an issue of mine. I try and do a lot of quick glances, but that doesn't seem to get me much. And when I stop for a longer look, I lose all momentum. Also - of course - training. Need to do more swimming to get faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

Felt longer than this, but still was too long. I was exhausted coming out of the swim, and it showed when I was trying to get my socks on. I spent probably 10 seconds just staring stupidly at them, trying to figure out why they weren't going on right.
What would you do differently?:

Most of this was just a mental block.
Bike
  • 41m 6s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 18.10 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't have my nutrition for the bike (it was in my truck). This probably affected me more mentally than physically - I let it get to me. Going out had a very nice tailwind - hit 31mph at one point. Coming back, I just about died with the headwind and the rolling hills. Didn't drink nearly enough water - and this hurt me in the run.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Duh.
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Thought this transition was faster than it turned out to be. I busted ass as soon as I got my shoes on, and everything else ran smoothly, so I'm not sure where I spent my time.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure.
Run
  • 27m 19s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Bad run for me. Went out too fast, then the fact that I didn't drink enough on the bike started to get to me. Started getting a little woozy and had to slow down a little. Got some water, picked up the pace again and my right Achilles really started bothering me, so I backed off again. Turns out I'm pretty dependent on my watch - it had died during the swim and I felt lost without it. On training runs I can usually gauge my pace pretty well, but I certainly had difficulties in this race.
What would you do differently?:

Pace myself better. More drinking on the bike. Fix my Achilles.
Post race
Warm down:

Got an ice pack for my Achilles and then found my friends who had come to cheer us on. I was the first in the water and first into the finisher's chute, so I was able to see all my friends finish, which was a total blast.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, heat, idiocy of losing my keys and not having things I needed.

Event comments:

I really enjoy this race for a lot of reasons -- it's a great venue, the race itself is well-organized and there's something about an all-women's race that has such a different vibe from a mixed race. But - the parking situation has GOT to be fixed. Volunteers were not well-informed about how to get to the reunite area and gave bad directions. The line for the shuttle really detracted from the race; when people started seeing how long it was, it seemed more important to get in line than it did to stick around and see other racers come in.
