Swim
Comments: Water temp was announced at 78 degrees so just wetsuit legal. Figured this was the perfect temp to test out just wearing the bibjon of my De Soto 2 piece suit. Overall I felt pretty good the entire swim. Went out and just kept an easy pace. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: Goal here was the same: hold a steady pace the entire ride but not go all out due to HIM in 2 weeks. First 11 miles not the smoothest road. 4 miles on some very nice road (avg aroun 24 on that stretch) then back 8 miles into a slight head wind. My ass was very uncomfortable on the last 7-8 miles. The bumps on the road took their toll and had to sit up a few times to get comfortable (which is wierd because I can ride 65m aero with no problem). Pace slowed a little bit on the back 9 and was content to let the one age groupers build a 100 yard lead (normally would have tried to reel him in). Got out of my shoes again WAY to early. Thought I saw a guy waving into T2 but acutally it was someone waving to pay to park. Rode on top of my shoes for a good mile. What would you do differently?: If this wasn't a final tune up, push the pace more. Could easily drop a minute here, maybe down to 1:15. maybe not inhale the pig $hit "aroma"? Nasty. Transition 2
Comments: Got on top of pedals way too early. Run
Comments: Still same strategy: keep an even steady pace through out the race. Was able to reel in the age group guy that got by me on the bike pretty quick. Once we turned onto 701 the heat really got going. Pace was right on target around 7:05/m through 2. Had an age group guy pass me on the run...waaaaah? Couldn't have that happen. Kept him in check for the next 3 miles. Around mile 5, I was feeling pretty spunky so the chase was on (he was about 50 yards ahead). Dropped the hammer and reeled him pretty quick. Once I was close, I used a Macca tactic and zoomed by him smiling, said good job, and cranking the speed way up as i went by hoping he wouldn't chase. It worked and I quickly got a 50 yard lead. Cruised in at a 6:45 pace for the last 1.2m. The guy I overcame on the run was a firefighter and got big cheers as he crossed behind. Congradulated him and grabbed my icee-pop. What would you do differently?: Same as above, If this wasn't a final tune up, push the pace more. Could drop a minute here. Post race
Warm down: Got my grub, packed up my stuff and waited for my wife to finish. I though she was having a bad day because I didn't see her until I was almost done on the run and she was just starting. I thought she was two waves behind me (but she was actually like 4 or 5 waves after me). Watched her finish, had some more grub and hit the road for a 3 hour drive home so we would watch the Gamecocks smack down the Bulldogs. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing really. This was an unplanned race (transfer from the cancelled Belews Lake spring in April) so I treated it like a HIM race tuneup. With only two weeks until Augusta and a 18m run planned in 6 days, I had no plans to kill my legs. I really had no idea I was near podium until I checked the prelim results after my wife had finished. Was shocked to see 5th. Got home and analyised my race and I see that I am now getting to the point were every little second counts when it comes to placing. Less than 3 minutes from an AG win. I see where I could have made up two minutes but my swimming is my achilles. Until I learn to swim, hope to clean up the transition times to maybe get me 20-30 seconds. Event comments: Enjoyed this race except for a few things, most of which are out of setup events control: Smell of pig $hit everywhere and again, hot run course. Wish they moved the run to go the other way around the lake to avoid running on 701. This seems like a simple change which would give us more room to run and less traffic. Everything was well organised, on time and as advertised. Good post race food and drink as usual. Last updated: 2011-07-18 12:00 AM

Slept surprisingly good at the Days Inn. Up at 5:30, had coffee, oatmeal, 1/2 PB bagel and a banana. Check in was very quick. Got myself and my wife setup with plenty of time to spare this time. This would be final tune up prior to Augusta 70.3 in two weeks.
Just some stretching and hanging by the lake with my wife. Enjoyed the "no pressure" race.
