Swim
Comments: Good swim. I was estatic to get out of the water and see 28:xx on my watch. However, after the race, the consensus is that it was about 100m short or so. Still, I swam very well, and a lower HR than I usually have on the swim. I seeded myself strongly. On the right side, front row. Went out with the fast group, and hung on past the first two buoys, then fell off a bit, and was kind of in a no-man's land. Then we ran into traffic from the wave in front. So I didn't get to do much drafting, but I sighted well, swam straight, and made good time. Steady effort the whole way through. What would you do differently?: Find some more feet to draft. Transition 1
Comments: Put shoes on in T1 as there is a hill right out of transition. T1 went pretty quick considering. Heard Haley and Jess yelling as I came out of the water, but didn't have time to figure out where they were as I was still discombobulated. What would you do differently?: Just go a bit faster. Bike
Comments: Nothing to steep. Just a bit technical, as the descents on some were winding. So didn't gain as much speed coming back down them as would have liked. Cadence didn't work. Didn't want to stop and fiddle with it, so I just rode by feel. Made sure to feel like I was spinning, so I was probably in the 90's most of the time, except for the climbs where it fell a bit. The first part of the ride was still cool. I only got one water bottle from the first 2 aid stations. Ice and water. Filled up aero bottle, and dumped the rest down my back. Ahhhh. That felt good. I stayed cool the whole bike, even after the sun came up and started cooking us. I maybe drank too much, as I peed a couple times. But better that than too little in the heat and dryness. What would you do differently?: Ride it harder. I definitely rode it 'easy' both by RPE and by power. Could have pushed it more I think, but this race I wanted to be conservative and make sure I validated my lottery spot. Transition 2
Comments: Quick T2. I stopped to hit the porta potty, so that's why it seems a bit long. What would you do differently?: Drink a bit less on the bike. Run
Comments: Mile1 : 7:50, AHR 152 Mile2 : 7:52, AHR 155 Mile3 : 8:18, AHR 155 Mile4,5 : 18:55, AHR 154 Mile6 : 7:25, AHR 154 Mile7 : 9:13, AHR 150 Mile8 : 8:35, AHR 152 Mile9 : 8:17, AHR 146 Mile10 : 10:10, AHR 147 Mile11 : 9:31, AHR 144 Mile12 : 9:37, AHR 147 Mile13 : 9:25, AHR 152 Felt good when I started. Legs were a little stiff feeling, but I had faith, and I had good splits, and they came around after 2 miles to feeling normal. It was HOT at this point. Some crazy spectators at mile 0.5 that had a kiddie pool, pool toys, and ice cold towels. :) ( Thanks Haley and Jess!!!! ) Saw Aaron, Dennis, and Bill on the run. As I was coming up towards the turnaround, saw Mike Ricci going the other way. What would you do differently?: Nutrition could have gone better on the run. I was focused on keeping hydrated, but I think I didn't get in enough calories, which is why I tailed off at the end of the run. That and the heat by then was cooking me pretty good. Post race
Warm down: Finished race, got my post race picture. Got a bottle of gatorade from the aid station at the finish. Went to the lake and sat down in water up to my neck. Cooled off. Waited about 10 minutes until I was shivering to get out of the water. Got another bottle of gatorade and drank that too. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat. Need more heat training to acclimate to the heat. Running especially. I was okay on the bike, the hills didn't wipe me out, it was on the run that I melted. Event comments: I'm going to Kona baby! After this race, I've officially validated my entry via the lottery. Oh yeah! :) A huuuuuuuge thanks to Aaron and Haley. Picking me and Jess up at the airport, putting us up for two nights, driving all the way to Lubbock and back, and supplying a non-stop good time. Hanging out and racing together with friends ( some old, some new ) really makes this so much fun. Remember, have you hugged your jockstrap today? Last updated: 2006-04-19 12:00 AM

The day before the race, went to the pancake breakfast with Bill and Aaron. Met Sebastian and Tommy there. Decent info at the talks.
Drove the bike course. Got to see all the hills. Came back, had lunch, then went back out to the race site for a short run and swim, and a longer floating around in the lake.
Had an early pasta dinner, went back to the hotel, and turned in for the night. Some damn dog in the parking lot was barking/howling all night. That didn't bother me too much, but was slightly irritating.
Got up at 4am. Woke up just before the alarm went off. Out of bed, bowl of cereal, banana, clif bar. Used the facilities. ;)
Got to the race site, walked down the big hill, and setup my transition area. Got wetsuit, cap, goggles, and headed down to the lake.
Swam about 5-10 minutes before they kicked us out of the water for the pro start. Saw Aaron huddled in the water ( since he didn't have a wetsuit ). Took a gel about 15 min before my scheduled start time.
