  • Comments: The volunteers were incredible. I can't say enough about how friendly and helpful everyone was. It was a long, hot day and everyone at every aid station was cheering, helpful and very friendly. This race is very tough though. Lots of climbing, hot and definitely the hardest tri I've ever done.

  • Comments: It was a hot, hot, hot day. The aid stations did an outstanding job of making sure there was ice, cold rags, and cold water at every station for everyone, not just the front runners. My one complaint - end of the race there was zero food. unless you call orange slices and a dry bagel food, but there was free beer at the end. I LOVE that we were given all the beer we wanted to drink so we could sit in the lake and drink out beer, but maybe wasn't the smartest choice and the lack of any food at all, especially given we were to far out of town is a little disappointing. On the other hand, they were handing out IVs like candy for anyone that wanted one just because.

  • Comments: Volunteers and police were absolutely awesome. Everyone was so into the race. Course was great. Aid stations, especially on the run, were plentiful and well stocked. I would have preferred oranges and/or bananas on the run. Less than 4 minutes separated this race from my PR. Since this was a much tougher course, I consider this a great race for me. Not much happening right after the race because everyone had to go get ready for awards. I managed to get one of the coveted buffalo awards and I managed to snag a slot to the 70.3 World Championships in Austria. Keep training!

  • Comments: I went home and showered, iced all my joints, had a glass of Pinot Noir, took a two hour nap, and in the early evening went for about a 1.5 mile walk with my sister. I swore after finishing that maybe I had made a mistake registering for the full. However after my recovery I was as determined as ever. Also after swearing off the HIM distance, I had already registered for another one that evening.

  • Comments: First time doing this race, I did it because I heard it was tough. Will be back again since it is such a challenging course. As the RD said this is not a Starbucks HIM, It is old school. I kind of liked it that way, not as glitzy as Galveston but still very well organized.

  • Comments: The volunteers were the bomb. Plenty of stuff on the course. Wetsuit strippers rocked it, and all the drink givers were amazing. The course is a bit cramped and not too good for spectators. This is only my 2nd IRONMAN (logo) race and comparing it to Oceanside is just not right as O'side just kills it in the fun factor. The finish chute had participants dragging their families down the chute (one dude did it right in front of me, which is cool, but geez, I thought that was against the rules), the finisher shirts were just layed on a table and the volunteers there were just talking and ignoring athletes as they walked by. I did not see any food or drink after. Maybe they hid it or it was all gone as I was too slow. I understand the area to have the Transition and end of event area is cramped, but it was so small, I missed it I guess. There needs to be people herding athletes around to where they need to go (like O'side) as we aren't really paying attention to what we should be doing.

  • Comments: Really like the Hawaiian aid station on the run, it was very cool. Overall a very good experience and I may do it again, but it doesn't have the same vibe as lets say Boise, but better than Lake Stevens.

  • Comments: The volunteers were in abundance and were all really great. The organization and execution of the entire event was also great, kudos to the Mike and Marti Greer. It’s a challenging course, I can only imagine what it would be like on a 100+ degree day. It’s a WTC and IM-branded event, but has a local race feel to it. I really like both the cotton t-shirt and finisher’s tech shirt. I have a lot to learn, but for it being my first HIM I was happy with the result.

  • Comments: We started just about 10 minutes late because of early morning storms which moved the buoys around a bit. This is an awesome venue. Lots of variety on both the run and the bike. Aide stations well stocked, and there was even ice between a couple of the aide stations. There's plenty of challenge to be had here as well. Some hills, some flat, some wind - Something for everyone. The Greer's put on a very well organized race.

  • Comments: Walking the bike and gear back up bike hill #1 (8% grade) after just completing a HIM was a total kick in the shorts. Please rent 2-3 golf carts for volunteers to drive participants and gear back to the parking area.

  • Comments: I am done with this race! 3 times is plenty. I have had good ('10), bad ('09) and ugly ('12) races here... I am good! Ha. It's a challenging race that is for the above average athlete. It's simply time for me to enjoy other races besides this one.

  • Comments: The deal is people get crushed on this course, train harder and try to come back and win. Some amazing athletes can have a great race here but not me. They did a great job with the aid stations. Volunteers are amazing considering the sun and heat. Plenty of water and ice and you need it to get through this mother. Ice down the shorts, in the hat, in my mouth and in both hands most of the run(who am I kidding - walk). Good luck to you if you want this challenge. I've been there, got the shirt and the medal.

  • Comments: As previously mentioned, I had ONE goal for today...finish under the cutoff to validate my Kona lottery slot. Mission Accomplished. Other things I learned/observed/realized. I tested out a new nutrition plan. Y'all know from reading most of my race reports that porta potties and I have a history. I'd been suspecting for years that I was just plain trying to eat too much. I've been working with a new nutritionist lately who agreed with that assessment and has had me training on about a third of the calories I used to try to consume. Well, it's hard to claim success with a test set of ONE, but I thought today was massively successful. I didn't have one iota of GI distress. And I still had plenty of energy. Still a few kinks to iron out and I'd still like to make it simpler (it required a bunch of memorizing), but I think maybe this has the potential to be a game changer for me. I had more calories on the run than intended, but I had no other way to get electrolytes into me

  • Comments: I did take away from this race was that I could suffer and get through it. The race wasnt good but i feel good about it. Now that its been about a week and now I think there could be a full 70.3 in my future. The only bad thing was once I was done there was no place to get food there. I was really wanting something with meat in it.

  • Comments: Honestly, this race has a lot going for it in terms of organization. The course is challenging but not as brutal as some have said. The volunteers are the best I've seen, with lots of support. It just comes down to the location. Lubbock sucks. It boring, hot, and windy. Put this in another city, with better climate, and it's a great race. Put it in Lubbock in the summer, and buyer beware

  • Comments: This is a tough race. Not a place to go for a PR, but the challenge is exactly why people show up year after year. The course isn't pretty and Lubbock isn't a great place to visit, but the challenge makes it memorable. Very well organized and a ton of volunteers on the course. I can't say enough about the volunteer help.

  • Comments: Overall, considering my training volume and the race-day conditions, I felt I had the best race I could today so I am very pleased with my effort. I was able to mentally and physically manage a very difficult bike leg and put in a strong effort on the run, a run where I was even able to negative split the course.

  • Comments: The aid stations were plentiful. Overall the race ran smoothly. I was hoping for some pizza or something at the end. Maybe it was all gone by the time I finished...This course is tough. I would not recommend for as someone's first HIM. The hills, wind, and heat make for a fierce combination of things to battle. I definitely felt a sense of accomplishment, but my time was somewhat disappointing.
