Swim
Comments: I knew this was going to be a slow swim. I haven't been very religious with my swim training lately. This is the longest OWS I've done and I took it slow to make sure what kind of effort I was going to be putting out. What would you do differently?: MORE OWS TRAINING. My navigation and ability to swim in a straight line suck. Transition 1
Comments: Slow and steady, grabbed extra water for the ride. What would you do differently?: Not much really. Bike
Comments: Same deal, I played it safe on the ride. Or, so I thought. Stopped to see if I could help a guy with a flat and just had kind of a pleasant ride thinking I'd have some run left in me. About mile 21 my calves started tightening up and I thought " Oh-oh, this might be a long run if this keeps up." I kind backed off again for the last 4 miles to see if that would help, and I thought it did. Unfortunately, this is where the wheels started to fall off for my race. What would you do differently?: Conditioning...... Transition 2
Comments: Took a little time to drink some gatorade and grab a chomp. Stuffed an extra water into my top and took off. What would you do differently?: Not much. I could hurry a bit more though. Run
Comments: Oh wow. I thought I was going to be OK for about the first 1.5 miles. I was horribly mistaken. After missing a turn on to the trail running up a large unneccesary hill, I got back on course and stopped at the aid station for gatorade and water. I took back off and made it about 1/2 mile before three things happened - My calves and hamstrings tightened up like I had an alien living in my legs, I damn hit the ground, and I seriously almost cried. Once I got all that drama stretched out where I could walk again, I took off to the KC multisport tent on the Dam. I stopped there again grabbed a GU, water and gatorade and stretched a bit. I thought I was good, so, off I went again - for about a 1/2 mile. Halfway up, maybe less, the hill after the dam the hamstrings went all alien again and the same drama as before played out again. I suspect I looked like a dumbass of epic proportions bent over in the middle of the road stretching while everyone passed by asking if I was Ok. I appreciated that by the way. Once again, everything loosened up so I could continue and off I went. I started a run/walk thing with a guy named Aaron that we contiued to the very end at this point. Along the way we picked up three other ladies and christened ourselves "The Lifeboat". All five of us were hurting for certain, so we just walked up hils and jogged down them. Thats how finished too, 5 abreast lol. What would you do differently?: CONDITIONING!!!!!!!!! I ran out of training way before I ran out of race. Post race
Warm down: Walked around trying not cramp up and fall down in front of everybody. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. I didn't have a nutrition plan really either so that probably didn't help. Event comments: I'd do this one again. Praying the entire time for a freak cold front to come through.
