Swim
Comments: Not a good swim for me. I haven't been swimming much the last week or two. My navigation in particular was not good. I had a really hard time getting myself to swim straight. I got warm toward the end of the swim, sleeveless wetsuit probably would have been better, but the full suit is all I have. What would you do differently?: Swim straight. Transition 1
Comments: Nothing to see here, just got in, did what I needed to do, and got out. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Really good ride for me. I set a fairly hard pace early on and maintained it for the entire ride. I should have hydrated more, I only drank about 35 oz water and 20 oz sport drink, and it was very hot and humid. I am a heavy sweater so that is not enough for me over this distance. There was a 3-4 mile stretch that was into the wind toward the end of the ride that was kind of tough, but once I got back to the lake, I was cruising again. Minor gripe, at the end of the ride, you go around a turn and the dismount line is RIGHT there, with no forewarning from the volunteers or race officials. Had to slam on brakes to stop in time. Was not able to do the flying dismount and had to run in my bike shoes because of this. My fiance said she saw at least 3 people go down, one of them hard, because of lack of warning about where the dismount line was. Hopefully this will change for future races. What would you do differently?: Hydrate better, and know ahead of time where the dismount line would be. Transition 2
Comments: Was a little flustered from the dismount situation, so took a bit longer than I would have liked. But not too bad. What would you do differently?: Not much. Run
Comments: This is where the wheels fell off of this race. I got off the bike feeling ok, but after running about a half mile I realized the run was going to be tough. It felt so hot with the humidity, and the first 2 miles of the loop were with a tail wind at just the right speed so you were running in stagnant air. I was sweating a ton but it didn't do any good at all. Managed to hold 7:30/mi or so for the first loop, second loop was significantly slower. I just could not keep my heartrate down with the heat. Held on as beast I could to the finish, and managed to pick it up a bit the last half mile or so. What would you do differently?: Hydrate better, maybe use ice like I did at Racine a few weeks ago to better deal with the heat. Post race
Warm down: Walked around for a while, got the free lunch and a water, then hopped in the lake to cool off. Once my buddy finished, I grabbed my age group award and we headed to the B-dubs in Owatonna for a huge pile of wings. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat and humidity. Event comments: Good race and a great and very friendly community! Last updated: 2011-07-22 12:00 AM

One of my buddies wanted to do a race this summer, so signed up for this a few weeks before on a whim. I had planned to not race for the 8 weeks or so before Ironman Wisconsin, but I thought doing this would be a nice mental break from the grind of ironman training. I did a lot of yardwork, rotated my tires, and went for a walk with the fiance Saturday morning and afternoon, so didn't get much rest the day before. We drove up from Iowa Saturday afternoon, checked into the hotel, and did packet pickup. The town was really nice! Got some dinner at a local restaurant and my fiance and her friend had some drinks while I pounded the water down. I knew it was going to be hot so I wanted to make sure I hydrated well. Got back to the hotel, relaxed a while, and got to sleep around 10, and slept really well. Up at 6 and over to the race site with about 20 min. to set up transition. Got that done, then walked down to the lake to decide whether or not to wear the wetsuit. This race was not USAT sanctioned so water temperature did not necessarily need to dictate the decision. The water felt just cool enough, so I decided to wear it. No warm up though.
No warm up.
