Transition 1
Comments: Pretty good transition overall. No issues. 22/34 AG, 88/170 overall Bike
Comments: I felt the bike went very well for me. The avg MPH would have been a bit higher if it weren't for the looooong distance between the timing mat and the mount/dismount line, and the HUGE hill we had to run up with our bikes to get to the mount/dismount line. The time running/hiking with my bike had to have been 90 seconds or perhaps more. My garmin had 18.5mph average which, given how hilly the course was, I was quite happy with. What would you do differently?: Nothing. If I had pushed harder I would have died worse on the run. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty quick, no issues 14/34 AG, 42/170 Overall Run
Comments: I ran right past the turnaround point and only discovered my error as I was heading toward the finish. I ran an extra 1/2 mile, so my time would have been around 54min or so had I not done this. Stupid... What would you do differently?: Pay more attention to the run map and try to focus on the race rather than drift off in a heat-induced delerium. Post race
Warm down: Had to lie down for about 10 minutes to get my wits about me. I was pretty wasted. Event comments: So last night when I was looking at the forecast for today's race I just kept thinking to myself that the heat would be "the challenge of the day". Challenging it was. The swim went well. The bike also went pretty well (18.5mph avg on a very hilly course). Then I got the run. It was 90 degrees with about 90% humidity by 10am when we were on the run course. That course was fairly hilly, more so than I expected. I couldn't run all that fast simply because it was too darned hot. But, the worst part was that in my heat-induced delerium I TOTALLY missed the half-way turnaround and ran an extra .5 miles. Ugh - that was pretty demoralizing. The second half of the run I just tried to just keep a steady but slow pace and tried to keep within what I could do in this heat. My official time shows I came in at 2:49 - but I stopped my Garmin at 6.2 just to give me an idea of where I should have been. After finishing I had to lie down for about 10 minutes. My buddy Dave looked me and said "Dude, you don't look so good. You should go to the med tent." I didn't do that, but after about 30 minutes I got my wits about me again. It was great that I had a lot of friends there, but doing a longer-distance tri in the Virginia Piedmont in July probably isn't the greatest idea in the world... Last updated: 2011-07-28 12:00 AM

My friend Dave picked me up early and we got there right at 6am. Very leisurely pace - not hurried at all setting up.
Swam a bit to try out some new goggles. Luckily I had no issues with them.
