Swim
Comments: I'm still not much of a swimmer, but this was my best swim so far. I was much more relaxed than I've been in other events. I guess I must swim better in cool salt water. I definitely felt more buoyant and relaxed. I actually drafted for a while (a first for me). What would you do differently?: Keep improving my stroke efficiency and turnover rate. Transition 1
Comments: I was a little surprised to see some athletes walking to, through, and from the transition area. I guess they weren't in much of a hurry. I needed all the help I could could -- so I ran. What would you do differently?: Need to work on getting out of wetsuit quicker. I pre-mounted my bike shoes on my pedals and ran barefooted through the transition area. It's not that difficult to do, and makes a huge difference. Bike
Comments: No complaints. I had fun. I passed a lot of folks. Either the course has improved or some of the earlier reviews of this race on BT overstated the road conditions. What would you do differently?: Work on cornering more efficiently. Transition 2
Comments: I slipped out of my bike shoes before dismounting, and ran with my bike to my transition area. What would you do differently?: At some point, I need to start running without socks, especially for a short run like this one. Run
Comments: I was hoping to get the run done a little quicker. But I can't complain. I had a good sprint at the end and just barely slipped under my overall goal time for the race. What would you do differently?: I ran a little too comfortable of a pace (7:44/mile). I should have picked it up a bit on the first lap. Post race
Warm down: Walked around the finish area for about 20 minutes. Stretched. Drank some fluids. Ate some strawberries and a couple of bagels. What limited your ability to perform faster: My swim still needs a lot of work. The good thing about this particular triathlon is that the swim is short (500 meters), so it didn't have too negative of an effect on my overall race. Event comments: This was my third triathlon and fifth multi-sport event. It was easily the most enjoyable race I've done so far. I was hesitant to do it because some of the other BT race reviews weren't too keen on the (bumpy) road conditions for the bike leg. I also wasn't sure about swimming in the San Francisco Bay. In both cases, my worries were unfounded. I was extremely comfortable throughout the entire event, and I'm glad I did it. This would have been a good first triathlon for me if it had been held earlier in the season. I loved the cool weather. http://stevendellago.blogspot.com/2011/07/splash-dash-and-bliss-dan... Ate a light breakfast. Left my house at about 5 AM, arrived on Treasure Island at about 6:30. Packed my stuff in a backpack and rode my bike (about a 1/3 mile) over to the transition area. Picked up my race packet. I liked the fact that the race organizers provided assigned transition spots. It really helped the flow since the assignments were based on age group divisions.
Jogged, stretched, ran some strides, watched earlier swim waves.
