Pre-race routine:

Day before:
We drove up to Buffalo the day before to pick up the packet. We also drove the bike path while video taping. We then burnt the video on a DVD and watched it a couple of times. Total geek. As for dinner, we ordered Olive Garden to ensure maximum carbo load. BAD IDEA! I ate too much, and had stomach ache. Couldn't sleep until midnight. Bf gave me a massage, which helped a lot.
Day of:
Woke up still feeling like crap. Not hungry, but ate a ham and cheese s'wich because I thought I should. Arrived at race site at 715am. The Parking God was with us and we found an awesome parking space and a great spot for my bike. Got bodymarked. I think I was the only participant that had the numbers marked on my thighs, not my shins. Met with BT'er at 745am. Ate 1/2 cereal bar. Went back to T to pick up my wetsuit/cap/goggles for the pre-race briefing, which was totally unnecessary because my wave wouldn't start until 920am. While I was there, I kept putting body glide and sunblock, then more body glide and sunblock on myself because I was antsy...
Event warmup:

Casually walked around the site. Chatted with BT'er. Swam a little before swim start.
Swim
  • 09m 29s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

I alternated between breast and freestyle, partly to slow down and partly because the velcro around my neck was bothering me. I was able to swim continously without hugging a ducky. I swam a bit off course in the beginning, then I got better.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more. Loosen up the velcro.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

We had to run from the beach, uphill through the park, through Oly's T area to get to the sprint's T area. Wicked hilly run! By the time I got to my bike, I was out of breath. Transition itself went pretty smoothly. No complaint.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Bike
  • 55m 46s
  • 13 miles
  • 13.99 mile/hr
Comments:

HILLS! HILLS! HILLS! Long, gradual climb, followed by some downhill, then more climb! I was coasting quite a lot cus' I haven't figured out how to manage gear shifting. Most of the time it was too loose to pedal. Kept telling myself to stop after the next mile to drink, but I never did. However, I had no accidents, no breakdown, so no complaint. Somewhere along the bike route, Natascha zipped by me.
Funny: I noticed that there are orange spraypaint circles on the road, so I kept riding over them. Turned out there were potholes! The race people circled then so that cyclists would AVOID them, not run over them like SuperMarioBrothers!
What would you do differently?:

More T.I.T.S. :) And learn to hydrate while biking.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Easy T2 because I biked with running shoes. Helmet/liner off, cap on, grab bottle, then go! (see picture in avatar.)
What would you do differently?:

Ermm... call mom?? Just joking. :)
Run
  • 35m 41s
  • 3 miles
  • 11m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Because I didn't drink at all on the bike, I gulped down 1/2 of my 20oz bottle of Gatorade within the first mile of the run. BAD IDEA! Started to have stitches and had to walk. Legs felt like BRick... And the Gatorade made my hands all sticky. Ewww. Kept wanting to jump into the lake to wash my hands. Somewhere during the last mile, Natascha passed me again, and said "Good Job! (in German accent)" to me. :) Then I got passed by a 12 year old kid. (Boo..) I think I picked up some speed during the last 1/2 mile (strides got longer). I waved at my bf near finish and bunch of people waved back! It was a weird feeling to be at the center of attention. Oh, and I think I passed this other lady who was 6 mths pregnant. Ha!
What would you do differently?:

More running! More BRick!
Post race
Warm down:

Hugged IronSherpa bf. Regroup with BT'ers. Drank water, walked around, stretched the calves and quads a bit. Ate a cookie. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training!

Event comments:

Aftermath: Left before the lucky draw because we were concern about traffic on the one-lane highway. Almost fell asleep in the car, while bf was having major allergy attack. What a sorry bunch we are. Ordered DQ burgers and ate at home. Took a shower Silkwood style and it was the longest ever! Then slept for an hour. Woke up, and everything hurt. Ha! Bf kept saying that he was really jealousy of us being able to ride interrupted. Perhaps I should do a relay with him next year. :)
