Swim
Comments: There must have been some current on the way out. I really struggled more than usual but did not lose confidence. The trip back was fine. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: I lost my timing chip. I figured it was at the bottom of the lake as I prepared for the bike. ...then some lady ran up to me with the band and chip. She even scanned the chip at the transition for me. Very nice! What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: I pretty much worked on my biking during the last month. It payed dividends here but I suffered on the swim and run as a result. Balance! I am pleased with my overall biking. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: I forgot my race # as I left the transition area. I figured I'd be DQ'd but I wasn't. Just a brain fart! I got my camelback out of my cooler before I left. No prob. What would you do differently?: Remember my race #. Run
Comments: HOT. Hot. hot. Nasty hot. I fell apart. The run is almost ALWAYS my strength. NOT today. I crumbled. I jogged the whole thing and felt one second away from throwing up during most of the effort. (I didn't). What would you do differently?: Realize I don't handle the heat well and either try to acclimate more (I did train in hot weather) or resign to the fact I don't handle the heat well. Post race
Warm down: Ice water. Ice water in my suit. Shower. More ice water. What limited your ability to perform faster: the heat Event comments: Great job race organizers! Awesome. Almost perfect, in fact. Other than choosing a July race date in Central Illinois, everything else went extremely well. Great, great, great job on organizing two races for the 1st time (IronAbe and Stoneman). I woke up 15 min. early (before my alarm was set to go off) with the song, "So you had a bad day" playing in my head. NOT a good sign. I ate a breakfast bar and drank some water. I filled my camelback up with icey water and drove to the race (1/2 hr away).
I watched the Olympic distance race start. No warm-up. I was already sweating.
