Pre-race routine:

Peter woke me up at like 4am, because he gets up at ridiculous hours before a race. But it was alright, Triathlete House was rocking so I was pretty much awake.
I had some raisin toast (token CCTS breakfast now!) and I took my redbull way too late.... 15 minutes before I started!!

I was not sure I wanted to race. This was the race last year that it rained in and I came off in the Botanical Gardens when it rained and injured my ankle. I've been battling with that ever since, and it's not good. Not good AT ALL.
It poured all day Saturday, and was raining when we woke up in the morning. It wasn't just race nerves, I was genuinely scared. Singapore is five weeks away, and if I hurt myself again... well, I'm not going all that way for a holiday, put it that way!!
Event warmup:

Just a bit of a swim, and chatting with Joe to calm him down a bit. His first OD off not a lot of training and he was stressing his arse off.
Swim
  • 29m 50s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was not in the mood for this race. I put my wetsuit on determined that if it was raining when I got out, I was not going to race. My heart was not in it.
That, and the poor decision on the timing of my redbull... That shit BURNS on the way back up when mixed with salt water.
Seriously, I don't think I've been able to do an open water swim longer than 1000m without puking. At least these days, I am able to keep swimming and puke at the same time lol.

Idiot.

Not bad overall though, but it was 200m longer than it should have been (confirmed by other garmin data as well, and the TOs didn't have time to run the GPS over it before we started, I know this because our club has a TO) but it was over 5 minutes slower than last year. Oh well.

I had some chick beside me the whole way who didn't know how to swim straight. Stupid woman would swim ten strokes then ram into me. So I stopped and let her go past them went on her left instead of her right. Stupid idiot.
What would you do differently?:

Get in race frame of mind. Let the fear go.
Transition 1
  • 03m 57s
Comments:

I cut the legs of my wetsuit a bit shorter because they keep getting stuck on my ankles, and it was the best decision I have ever made.
Fantastic. But I was not in the right frame of mind (weather, fml) and I just rooted around. I forgot to put my number on (luckily my race belt was attached to my bike!! I found it halfway out of transition) and little things like that.
I got into my shoes well, and got them done up quickly before we hit the hill literally 100m out of transition. My tri clips are the best things I have ever bought. Yay!
What would you do differently?:

Stop fucking dawdling!! But really, working on my run would serve me better than a speedy transition, lol.
Bike
  • 1h 29m 44s
  • 40 kms
  • 26.75 km/hr
Comments:

Considering I didn't want to go out on the bike at all (and mulling over it in T1 quite extensively....) I went out. Turned the wrong way and had to go back (you suck Marshall, honestly, learn where the exits are!!) and headed out.
Got my mount perfect this time, and had my shoes properly done up before the mo-fo hill out of transition. I struggled for a little bit after my redbull flavoured spew in the water, and just got comfortable going uphill into the botanic gardens. Once I'd had something to eat and got down on the aeros, I was ok.
I saw Anna on Point Henry road and I think that's the only reason I had the sub-10 min 5km in that section of the ride... but I caught her a gave her a giddy up and kept going....
Coming back the other way was when the wind first hit me. At least it was while I was going up the hill. The hill still sucked, but I had the right gear, and I actually overtook a few people going up it!! GO me!! They might have been doing the long course and doing it for the second time, but I simply did not care.
After the turnaround, I just had a BALL. Smashed it on the way back, and caught one of the CCTS girls that overtook me early.
The hill was amazing, but damn those deep rims are scary when you're moving and it picks up a cross wind... couple of times I thought I was coming off but then went "Harden the fuck up, if you come off you come off"
I made the decision to smash the shit out of it on the way home, and left everything I had on the bike course. If I couldn't run afterwards, so what.
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot. I just need to lose some weight and learn how to hill climb, lol.
Transition 2
  • 03m 38s
Comments:

It would have been an alright transition if I didn't decide halfway out that I wanted a drink and went back to get my bottle... whatever
What would you do differently?:

Have a drink there instead of changing my mind halfway through my exit... lol
Run
  • 1h 29m 44s
  • 10 kms
  • 08m 58s  min/km
Comments:

I walked a bit in this, I wasn't really ready. But after I racked the bike I am like what the hell, let's finish this shit.
I walked up the hills. I walked through aid stations. And I walked a few steps at each km marker. But, I ran most of it. Singing eminem the whole way, but whatever.
It's STILL torture when you pass the finish line and you know that you still have 4km to go :( But I was so pleased to cross the line, even more pleased when I realised I beat last years time!!

I didn't like the new run course, you had to run through must and shit. Not happy jan. Ruined shoes. Slipping and sliding. Bah.
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot. I was pretty happy with that.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit. Found Joe, waiting for Peter to finish cos he was about 1.5km behind me, and had a chat with some of the other people I knew while we waited for Anna to finish the long course.
I wasn't sore immediately, just hungry!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Faith. Fear. That's all.

Event comments:

I don't think it was as good this year as last year.
I was a bit disappointed that they dismantled the timing for the people that were still out on the long course to make way for the elites. I know they were the headline event, but come the hell on. They should have run it on the Saturday like they were meant to last year.
