Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30am to the most annoying rooster alarm ringtone ever..no more roosters on race day! Packed up and car in record time and on the road early just after 5am. Got a bit turned around on the way there but I guess that's why we left early! Got to the race start and got a great parking spot and checked in easily.
Event warmup:

A quick swim to get used to the water. My focus today was the swim. I have this weird issue with swimming with my eyes open under water...it always freaks me out to see underwater and almost always leads to a panic attacks, but today I was going to try to push through that.

Comments:

I wasn't nervous at all but still stayed in the back of the group to avoid too much contact. Took off with no problem and was able to see underwater and swim near people without anything near a panic attack. WOOT! I felt super strong and sighted really well. I even tried a bit of drafting which worked pretty well! On the way back to shore I was a bit confused as people were going to the right of the sight bouy at the exit was on the left side of shore.. took my chances and went to the left of the bouy, since that was the shortest way. Was a good move, was able to pass loads of people. Nothing

Comments:

Getting out of the water was interesting as we had a run up a steep hill and ofcourse it was pretty muddy by that point. Lots of people were walking up the hill but I was channeling my inner high school cross country runner and ran up! Transition went fairly smoothly, tried to wipe the grass and mud from my feet but I would find out soon that wouldn't be necessary.

Comments:

It takes me a minute to get into my pedals but soon enough I was off. I was more frustrated then usual at the start as people were all over the road, one chick was riding on the left side of the road, I was super irritated. Then we hit a bit of a back up, two cars were waiting to pass cyclists going up a hill but I was going down hill at a high speed along with crazy chick, who tried to go around the car son the left side. I yell at her as I slow down and quickly pass the cars on the right (while holding my breathe that the cars didn't veer into the shoulder.)

After that little fiasco I noticed the sky looking quite dark, not a mile later the sky opens up. Heavy rain drops start pelting me. It was like Augusta all over again! So I made the bets of it and was mindful of turns and the white line. I forgot how hilly the bike course was but I had fun. I felt really strong even though I didn't want to get down in aero for fear I might slip. My legs started burning the last few miles, at which time Jamie passes me looking really strong! I didn't let it get to me but knew I was in a competitive age group so if I didn't place I wouldn't be upset. I tried to finish strong with enough left in my legs to run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

My shoes were completely soaked so I had to empty those out, grab my race belt, visor and a gel, since I didn't want to take the gel on the bike.
Run
  • 30m 17s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

The course was a mess, it had been constantly raining and with all of the foot traffic the trail was a wreck.. I kept repeating "Florida, Florida" in my head. I didn't need to injure myself during a $30 race when I had a $600 race in 2.5 months. I really took it easy and made sure I had solid footing, which was a challenge since this is a pretty technical course. I felt super strong and I hated getting passed but I knew I had to run smart with these conditions. I actually really enjoyed the run all things considered!
Post race
Warm down:

Warm down pretty much consisted of me running to transition to ensure my phone and iPod weren't flooded in my bag, I packed everything up in record time and took cover while it continued to pour. We had to stand around for at least 30 minutes before it even slightly let up. Scottie and I put everything in the car and went back for awards. Luckily we were able to find semi dry clothes to change into for the ride home but I did need to turn the seat warmers on as it was only about 72 degrees out. Not that I was complaining but a sweatshirt would have been glorious at that point!

Event comments:

Another great FS race, all things considered. This is still my favorite race of the year and the rain just made it more memorable!
